I moved here over the summer and have an 83 CJ.  I've been working on it over the winter and plan to register it soon.  I was wondering if there is anything that I need to be looking out for when I take it into the inspection station.  I did swap a later model 5.3 in it but the emmisions stuff is in tact.  I also did a frame repair but once I put a little undercoating on no one should be able to tell.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

1983 is older than 25 years, so you going to be emissions exempt.
You can also register and get Antique plates.

DMV will only need to a VIN inspection to prove paperwork matches to the VIN on the vehicle. This is done at DMV and you will need to bring a current insurance card.

All you need is the current registration from the state you are coming from. Because your name should be on the reg, you won't need a bill of sale of anything.

If you bought it from out of state and want to reg it here in CT, you'll need:

1) The actual registration from the vehicle in the state you bought it from (can be expired).
2) CT DMV bill of sale. The seller's name MUST be on the reg in #1.
3) Current insurance card.

DMV will cut you a 10 day temp plate if you go with the above mentioned to one of their offices. Then all you need is to do the VIN inspection.

Never underestimate the DMV. I have had far better experiences at the Wethersfield DMV than the Enfield branch.

another thing you can do (according to dmv's law enforcement line) is to have your local police department do it. most (not all) departments will do it if you ask (free) but others do not because car dealers were over using it.

download a Vehicle ID Number Verification form R-301-REV 7-2001

inspection authority will be the last box, Motor Vehicle Enforcement Authority.

bring this and any other paper work with you you don't need one in ct if you have a reg but the title will get you a long way if you still have it.

depending on the mood (they ARE supposed to accept it) of your DMV Representative of the day you might get away cheaper than having to pay for a temp reg and save your time.

have a wonderful day at DMV swear_mad

disregard my pd Vin verification note above.

apparently DMV just changed the regulation earlier this year that they themselves have to do them, even though today i got 4 differant responses on it from 4 differant people at the Enfield dmv swear_mad. a police department can only do them if they and the vehicle are out of state i.e. college student, military ect.

something else to keep in mind, even though they say you are getting only a VIN verification they also perform a free safety inspection Angry so make sure you have fender flares, no grease, oil ect anywhere it isn't supposed to be or you will get a VIN verification with a note of items that have to be repaired prior to registration. and have the great fortune to repeat the whole ordeal all over again furious3 zbanghead

now my rant:
i got to DMV this morning at 830am found out my form from my PD wasn't good, waited 45 min in line to get a temp reg for my trailer, flew home loaded the trailer, and my rig to both get checked got back to DMV at 11am 5 cars in front of me. inspections are closed from 12-1pm. had 3 cars in front of me got inspected at 230pm, failed because of grease drip from wet and overgreased fitting icon_question icon_exclaim swear_mad, found closest carwash i could fit into height wise and pressure washed the crap out of the whole underside of the rig. got back to DMV 315pm 3 cars again got reinspected at 350pm swore on my mothers grave i would name my firstborn after the inspector if he would overlook the lack of fenderflares, passed, parked in firelane in back, ran into dmv 355pm got in line before they close 400pm, finally registered at 500pm.

hope your experience is funner than mine
