I hate my ARB
« on: May 01, 2016, 08:34:35 AM »
OK, it's 14 years old, but it's been completely re-built. When I first got the Jeep I replaced the carrier seals, solenoids, pressure switch, and melted air line.
Last year the compressor ground wire melted off, and then compressor blew a gasket that connects the tank. So finally it's working correctly after 4 years or so.

So last Saturday I was wheeling, and when I turned on the front locker the compressor starts to run continuously, and I'm not locked  :swear_mad:
Today I started to look at it, hoping for a line leak , and I hear hissing from the vent tube  :swear_mad:

Tear down the front-end and build this ARB seal tester, and the fawking seal is toast  :swear_mad:

Is the seal worn on one side more than the other ? Could the air collar be walking in the housing ? Was the rubber for the seal still pliable ?

I hope the air supply to your home made seal tester was regulated down to 90 PSI or lower   Any higher and you will blow out the seal...

Yea, I'm not so sure about a non-selectable locker in a Dana 30 with a V8.

No problem,  I've got a lunch box locker in a Dana30 with the 401, so far so good.  The weak link seems to be the u-joints on the axle shafts.

Well, it's ready to go for Memorial Day. Had to take the whole front-end apart for a $4 seal.  :swear_mad:
Also installed a mini-starter for the hot start problem. Wrapped it with header tape, and heat blanket.

The heat wrap is going to hold moisture and cause some rusting or corrosion. I had heat wrap on my autocross car and it caused the headers to rust out.

My heat problem originates from the auto tranny going to 180-220, with tranny cooler in front of the radiator.
Header tape/wrap helps to move the heat out of the engine compartment. Ceramic coated headers might help.

That tranny shouldnt be running at 220.... is there a coolant / auto tranny fluid heat exchanger ?

220 happened when climbing from the tunnel road up that hill to Whitcomb Summit aired down to 8psi. Auto tranny heat exchanger in front of the radiator.
In the woods it's can reach 180, typically 160.

Driving the Jeep around town this weekend, and I'm getting a metallic cracking sound, I think coming from the rear rear. FAWK!
Sometimes going over a bump, sometime on acceleration. Pretty loud because you can hear over the exhaust sound. It think it's the rear ARB!

Well I still hate my ARB  :swear_mad: On the Fools Run, 2"-3" inches of snow, and no compressor? WTF? Checked for melted lines on the trail. Limped back to the air down spot. When I get it home I find the 30amp inline fuse under the compressor is blown  :swear_mad:

Is there something wrong with this compressor, where a randomly decides to melt down?

A friend of mine had that unit and had all kinds of trouble with the seals ,air line, just about everything. They (ARB) asked how much preload he had on the carrier ?  What? We were told if you werent driving it in with a soft face hammer , there wasnt enough . So we rebuilt it again with the shifty thing that striped so it wouldnt in-gauge again , they (ARB) finally offered the parts looking at his account and orders for parts.  Fooled with the shims to keep the good pattern but tightened it up going in and a bitch to get out.  He hasnt had a single issue internally since adjusting the preload.  Im talking prybars and grunts to get it out. Might be your issue if your carrier pops out easy.    FjR68

Far too much work for what they buy you. If you want selectable go e locker.

If you want maintenance free fun go with a Detroit

Damn I real hope they come up with a 35 spline, 44 E locker soon! I'm already set up for them and really don't want to deal with this BS!
