Hood Customization
« on: July 01, 2016, 02:49:02 PM »
For a while I've been thinking about doing some kind of airbrush design on my hood.
From a fellow member I got a black hood to use as my test subject.
I then settled on a design:
A JKU, and MB, and the Willys logo.

I masked everything off in my high tech spray booth, garage bay with fan on and doors open.
My intent was to spray the first layer grey, mask, spray flat black, reveal vehicles and logo in grey.

The masking of JKU, MB, and Willys logo

Didn't quite work out that way.
I was using Duplicolor Spray Wrap so if I didn't like design or outcome I could just remove it.
When I unmasked the grey came right up, so I just let the factory black come through the Carbon Black Wrap.

Installed
The edges are not as crisp in some spots as I would like, but that seems to be the nature of the material.
Also it took about 6 coats to get good coverage.
The directions say the more layers/coats the easier it is to remove.
My eventual plan is to do something more permanent using paint and airbrush.

I like that it's subdued with flat black on gloss black. So they were just vinyl decals that you used as masks?

For masking I downloaded drawings from web.
After figuring out the proportions I went to Fedex Office and spent a whole $4.00 to have them enlarged
and had multiple copies made.
Then I placed Friskette(masking material) down on hood, taped copy on top, and cutout outline of copy with xacto into Friskette.
Then pulled everything away to leave solid mask.

I have the hood to a point where I'm happy with it.
I took all spray wrap off, spray it with simple green, wait a few minutes and it peals off very easily.
Then I filled my knife scratches with automotive putty, wet sanded with 1000 and 2500, and buffed it with compound.
All the sanding scratches didn't come out so I expanded the area to be covered with paint.
I taped the edges first with vinyl pinstripe tape, then with painters tape and news paper.

Masked with primer and gloss black under color

Flat black sprayed, unmasked, and hood vents placed

Detailed the JK to look more like mine, 35s, doors off, top off, Fister Fab bumper, winch,
ORFab cage, and subtle angles underneath following the angles of the long arms.

I wet sanded, primed, wet sanded, and painted, masked, wet sanded and painted the black parts of the hood red.
I used Duplicolor factory matching spray paint.
The numbers and lettering goes as follows:
20: for the way the US Army IDed MBs during WW2
FF: cuz I'm a firefighter
08-JK: cuz thats what it is

SO after thinking and pondering for quite a while I spent way more hours then I ever thought I would
laying out, relaying out, taping, and masking out an American flag design to ghost in.

Tonight I finally got around to ghosting in the flag.
I used my airbrush with pearl grey and pearl white highlights.
That took very little time to do.
Depending on how the light hits it you get varying degrees of the effect, some angles you can
barely see it, others it jumps out.

After a bit of touch up of the red where the tape lifted it in a few spots, I'll clear it and see how closely the red matched the factory color.

very nice, always a pain getting the masking edges to blend without leaving a ridge. Many burry it in clear to smooth it...

Funny thing is the ghosting in of the flag was the easy part.
Just about 10 - 15 minutes of actual paint application via airbrush.
I understand painting is mostly prep, but wow...
It took much more time that I had even imagined to layout and mask the flag.

I haven't had a chance to see what it looks like in the sunlight yet.
That'll show the full effect of the pearls in the paint.
