Drones

At Fall Crawl we were talking about drones. $599 is a heck of a deal for a smart drone with a gimbal and GoPro integration... it doesn't have collision avoidance however.

Yeah read the reviews. Lol.

I read them too, but the Phantom 4, which is supposed to be one of the best drones out there also got bad reviews....

That haven't really introduced it yet, thought.
So who knows what type of features it will have.

Or better yet,  how much it will cost.

It'll have to be competitively priced with DJI. I bet you'll see various versions at similar price points to the DJI line. The advantage the Karma would have is to be better integrated with GoPro cameras. That's what was interesting about the Solo I mentioned above.

The nice thing about the new DJI's is you don't need a GoPro.
It's all integrated now, for a price.

Wow... that seems like a great price!  I know nothing about Go-Pro's.... does anyone know what the cost for a decent Go-Pro camera for this would run?

Rob, when you say you don't need a Go-Pro for this - not sure what you mean....

Sorry for the stupid questions - I plan on getting one but am totally stupid on the subject.

I have a $750.00 Drone budget to work with......is it possible to get something decent at that price or splurge and go something better?

Appreciate any help.....thanx/mc

I only know what I'm told on youtube lol. I know a Drone guy, I'll see if I can get him to join this conversation. He's a Jeeper from RI that I met at Fall Crawl last year.

Marty,
What Rey posted is a good drone.
You just have to figure out what exactly you are going to want to do with it.

If it's something to play around with in the backyard.   Then get a cheap one for a couple hundred.

If you want all the bells and whistle like tracking and collision avoidance,  double your budget.

Yup, Art said the 3DR Solo is a good drone, but not as turn key as the P4.

Solo is an awesome drone...
But ... Not as turnkey as phantom 4
Has some very advanced videography features
And I really like the controller
Why are we getting a drone ?
Mainly for use on Jeep trips. The follow functions are cool, but seem ok only out west where it wide open. Not sure how that would work on New England trails with trees.
EXACTLY
Even with the collision avoidance on P4... We will still be hitting trees

Inspire is the craft I wanna get
It starts around $3k
With no bells and whistles
However it is no beginner
Drone
Just google inspire fail

I asked Art what he meant by turnkey. I saw a video that says you have to calibrate the Solos Flight Controller before using it.

Yeah... Calibrating is critical.
Setting home is critical
Knowing how the take care of Lipo batteries is especially critical
They are very expensive... ( $100-$150 each )
And can be destroyed in one flight if not properly charged/maintained

You absolutely cannot go wrong with the Phantom 4. Here is a good video showing the differences between the P4 and Solo.

I bought the Cheerson CXHOBBY Professional Drone 2 years ago. I use my GoPro Hero4 Black with it. Drone came with the GoPro mount. Just needed the gimble for it. Has GPS, autopilot, etc. No issues. Not the most expensive drone out there (I think I got this one for around $300). They are less expensive now though. This one needed to be calibrated as well. That probably took me the most time in learning how to fly this thing. Almost need a pilots education to fly it! But once you get used to it, it's awesome. I take my out on the boat and get some great pics/vids when are fishing. Also use the GoPro on my rifles, fishing poles, snowmobiles...pretty much anything I can mount it to. Love it!! Phantom 4 is a good one as well (co worker has one) but I wasn't looking to spend $1000 or more for something that I was most likely to crash the first few times out (which I did!!).
In the end, we're all just chalk lines on the concrete. Drawn, only to be washed away...For the time that I've been given...I am what I am...

The gimbal mount actually detaches and becomes a handheld... cool.

Downside it that it is only compatible with the New Hero5 or Session5, or Hero4.

Only downside is that it doesn't look like it has a tracking system.
