Windstar Intake-Cowl Mod?
« on: January 02, 2017, 06:56:16 PM »
Has anyone done this? Due to the CJ grill, I need to do something with the stock airbox for clearance. Also, the stock YJ airbox has an "intake"  attached to the grill and that went away with the CJ grill.  I was first going to buy a cheap chrome tube and cone filter, but I would be gaining clearance and getting hot, dusty air. I'm definitely not spending $250 for a K&N CAI, so I found the Windstar mod. You get clearance, cold air from the cowl and you can use paper off-the-shelf filters.

I run an open air paper filter because I converted to TBI from carb.  It has the normal 4BBL. size neck , I think it 5.5" . Anyone know of a cone that would fit over that so I could do something like this ?   FjR68

Apparently this is a really common mod on the TJ's. I know tons of XJ guys run cowl intakes. I was planning to do so on the silver Jeep. I might see if this system can be made to work on the XJ as well. Looks like a very clean install.

I like that set-up!  Apparently it drastically decreased your air intake temperature...

I'm bummed, because this is apparently a TJ thing and not so easy on a YJ because of the cowl design.

That is what I have been looking at replacing my spectre cowl intake with because it uses normal intake filters.

run paper filters, those k&n do not clean the air as well as regular paper.  I spent years designing filtration systems.  the oil dipped fiber filters let through a lot more dirt than paper.  They don't clog but that is their only benefit.  Just replace the paper with a new one and keep going.

On my 98 5.2L grand cherokee it had a standard 4 inch throttle body with a plastic horn coming off it.  I took out the airbox and ran a cone filter on the end of the horn for a while. Like Beaker said, the engine would stall at idle after a while and I would have to clean out the throttle bodies with a tooth brush and carb cleaner because there would be black dust caked on the sides.  I went back to the paper filter and air box and never cleaned the throttle body again.

I think that air horn would work for you if you could find one,.  It was not very tall where it connected to the throttle body.

The YJ cowl has the drain tube and it is the same area that is the intake for cabin air. I have decided to not run a top, even in the winter, just a safari top and a windjammer with doors, so cutting the intake into the cowl should be OK.

I still may just do something under the hood. I read that some have used this paper filter instead of the cotton K&N type.
