gas tank cleaning suggestions
« on: March 14, 2017, 12:19:23 PM »
Anyone know of a place that will clean poly gas tanks? I have two that are fullof sludge. I know I can clean them myself, but I'm concerned about disposing of whatever comes out of the tank (sludge and cleaner the cleaner)

Meh.

What your neighbors don't know.....

Try a radiator shop.  They usually have tanks and the right chemicals to treat and clean that sort of stuff.

I decided to try to clean the tanks myself. Didn't want to spend $200 for someone else to do it. It ended up being pretty easy. There was only about a gallon of gas in the tanks, so I bought a $8 siphon pump from amazon to suck out the old gas. Then I used a chain with a string tied to the end (to pull the chain out) and sloshed the tank around with the chain inside the tank. This loosened the bigger pieces of rust. I put carb cleaner and then acetone with the chain. After it was mostly clean I put a rag in the tank and pushed the rag around with a piece of pipe to get the last of the crap out.

I've been running it with gas out a of a gallon container connected directly to the fuel pump, not even connected to the tanks.

These are the pickups from the tanks.

I used a gas tank sealer in the tank on the willys. It sealed up all the loose rust and scale. Before I did that I was constantly clogging fuel filters with rust. Haven't had that problem since.

C'mon, where's the fun in that? What about good old poor lighting, angled mirrors and blind faith? LOL
