I'm planning on starting a similar project, as soon as I'm done working. New oil pan, gasket and mail seal.

Yes, in fact they call them "snap ups" lol. I used them on the opg on my dodge. Super easy.

So my first snag, I get the fan clutch off and it has all sorts of play in it. Actually glad I found it now instead of Moab lol. Add $40 to the job.

Making progress, radiator and fan out. Lets not get into how my Jeep sat with no radiator or grill for weeks during the winter lol.

Instructions on package said to use grease if you're not going to run it right away.

check that the sealing surface on the harmonic balancer isn't grooved to badly. Do you have new balancer seal?

Do you mean the seal that goes in the timing chain cover? If yes, the timing cover gasket set I bought has a seal.

2 more snags. I don't have a proper punch to get the block side of the seal out. Heading to Home Depot.

I can't fit my impact to get at the crank bolt. I rented the removal tool, hopefully I can use that as a crank holder.

Dull the end of a nail to tap the seal out.

yea, that's the seal. I was also saying check the mating surface on the balancer isn't grooved to much or it won't seal.

If your talking rear main.  Piece of brass threaded rod will punch it out.

I didn't get a chance to work on this as much as I wanted. I still have to button up the oil pan.

So, I was able to check the timing chain since I had the oil pan off, and there is only about 1/4" of play. I was hoping it would be worse, because that means my noise is elsewhere. I'm thinking I won't bother changing it. I'm glad I dug into it, because I found the bad fan clutch.

If your talking rear main.  Piece of brass threaded rod will punch it out.

It was in there pretty good. I tried all sorts of things, but couldn't get it to move, and it was starting to mangle.  I ran out and grabbed $9 Harbor Freight punch set. I put the punch in a long socket with am extension and it worked like a charm. The rear main seal is done. Just have to button up the oil pan.

1/4 inch is a lot of slop in a timing chain - it causes plenty of noise - change it out while you you are this far into the engine

You know it is just the Harmonic balancer left before I get to the timing chain cover... Thanks Frank.

I have way more slop than that in my timing chain, no noise and I was getting 22 mpg when I was on stock tires... If you are already in there and have the parts, I would most likely still change it out, but I doubt that's the noise.
