It looks like more slop than I thought. Hopefully replacing it helps.

Absolutely. I just have to line up the timing marks, remove the chain and sprockets, then start putting the new parts on.

Side note.... how any different sizes of bolts can they spec for the timing cover?

And the one that also bolts on the alternator bracket was fun to go get to the nut.

There is no teeth left on the cam sprocket .  You drag racer you . Thats called a HIVO chain . Most stock engines came with them. Upgrade to a roller chain . It looks like a motorcycle chain instead of a bunch of plates pinned together.  There is also a double roller set up for most applications . much stronger and will outlast a HIVO.  FjR68

I'm surprised the chain didn't skip a tooth or two looking at that slack and worn teeth on the sprocket!  You might want to degree the cam...

The teeth are still there. It was an illusion because they are tapered. So I'll just go with a standard replacement.

Another question... the balancer/pulley seem fine. Should I just change it since it's a 93 with 145k?

Or put the old one back on and when it goes, you're the target of senseless immature jokes. Either way the Club benefits...   :rotflmao:

OK Ian, fear no more! Lol

I only have time to work on thus a little at a time. Only a little progress.

I lined up the timing marks and removed the old chain and sprockets.

Compared them as a check, then installed.

Timing cover has a new seal and ready to go on.

By looking inside the cover it would show you if the chain was touching the cover making the noise . That looked like a lot of slack Rey.  I bet when you installed the new set you found it was way more critical to be spot on moving both at the same time. The engine will be happy and you will too as your cam was running late stealing low end power . She gonna be like BrandyNew !    FjR68

It's been hitting the chain guide, which shouldn't be a problem, but the original chain guide is petrified hard as a rock. I didn't realize how bad it was until I compared it to the new one.

That's actually not too bad... I changed the timing chain in my GPZ1100 and it was WAY worse than that...

Course the bikes have tensioners on them too, so they don't slap around...

I also got a new harmonic balancer. The original was pretty scored, so I'm glad I did.

A little more progress. New timing chain,  sprockets, chain guide, balancer, waterpump, thermostat and housing.

All buttoned up nice just before I saw the new thermostat on the bench

The worst one was when I forgot the oil slinger and had to pull the cover.

Crush cuts up a YJ to try to sell tub, engine and transmission, Crush sells a few CJ7 tubs and a frame, Crush does grocery shopping to make wifey happy. Maybe Crush clears the yard a little.......

Before all this Crush goes and buys a 78 Ford F150 that actually runs and drives, I hope(hopefully yard is cleared out to fit it lol)

DONT be like Crush, have a happy wifey....
TONS AND TONS OF CJ AND YJ PARTS..........
