OK, it took me TWO weekends lol. I finally buttoned everything up last night.

The GOOD: It started and seems to run smoother, no more leaks, replaced some parts for general maintenance, and I found 3 issues; fan clutch. badly scored harmonic balancer and oil pressure switch.

The BAD: It didn't fix the noise. The interesting and disappointing thing is that when I first started it, it ran quiet for about 5 minutes, then it started.

Front seal (came with the timing cover gasket set)
Fan Clutch
Water Pump

have you tried pinpointing the noise with a stethoscope?

I haven't. Probably should have done that first lol. Maybe at Mount Washington, I can have you guys listen to it.

I had my money the noise was the fan clutch.

It it a rattle, tick or knock?

Might be a dead lifter.

Sounds like if it went away after a couple min. Throw some Marvel Mystrey oil in the crankcase and see if that cleans it up...

That stuff is a great old time remedy, I had a 345 Scout motor I let sit a while, when I got around to starting it again, it spit and sputtered and generally ran like shit. Poured some MMO down the carb a little at a time while it was running, smoked out the whole street, but slowly the engine smoothed out and ran great after that! It unstuck whatever was stuck!
nada! Shopping for parts for new build.

You can try Seafoam in the crankcase then change the oil.

A long wooden dowel held to your ear works pretty well for finding ticks and knocks too.

Rislone in the yellow can does a good job too.

I use a 3' screwdriver. Could it be any of the accessories?
