Running two Batterys
« on: August 05, 2017, 09:52:15 PM »
Time to buy new batteries for the TJ, currently I run dual batteries, one for normal jeep accessories and startup, the second for the Winch and minor accessories.

Being that I already have the isolator wired, double battery tray, ex...  should I stick with twin Interstate batteries, or should I drop down to a single and run a Redtop?  Price for one vs two is close enough to a wash.

Is two batteries worth it is the biggest question

Personally I've run a Red Top and Yellow Top Optimas on my YJ with a winch for over a decade and my new to me TJ has a vintage Optima Red Top that handled winching up the OFR ledge fine.

I've always wanted to go dual batteries (because of hearing the Draz-Catrini trip back from PA with no working alternator)  and I'm a prepper and like spare parts with me "two is one and one is none"

If you already have a dual battery setup - go with it, If not - get a single AGM battery and sell me your dual battery set-up for my TJ

Look at the difference of RED and Yellow Top Optima. Red is really for high-torque starting. Yellow consistent power/drain. I went with yellow for winching. I guess my choice could be debated.

I was going to go dual and frankly got lazy and didn't do the under hood mods.

Also, Johnson Battery claims they resolved the quality issues with Optima sine acquiring them. I also went with Optima as they are readily available at Autozone and Advanced. Both stores are generally available where we wheel...

There is an Interstate Battery store/shop on Homestead Avenue in West Hartford I drive by every day.  They have great deals on referbs if your willing to go that route.  I have purchased a few of them and never had a problem.  The guys are great to work with.  I usually just go in with dimensions I am working with and just ask them for the biggest CCA battery they have that will fit in the hole.

I just installed a yellow top and the 10+ yr. old red top came out.  Single batt. in my CJ.  I was so glad and nervous at the same time , as The alt. belt broke this past weekend on OFR also.  Was able to not only drive out of there , but locate a parts store in N.Adams and get a new belt. Being new , I knew I had enough juice to make it without hurting the batt.   With twin batts. you still have 12 volts , just double the draw amps .   I also have a 140 amp. alt to help the batt. handle the needs of recovery , daily usage , and the winch.  High amp alt or twin batts. Your choice .    FjR68

I ran dual yellowtops with the high output Alt.  I didn't run an isolator, just a couple link cables.

AFAIK, they are still in the Jeep (They were when I sold it).
