This is just a general question.
It could be used for  towing the JEEP if I ever go that way

It depends on the model year and gas vs diesel...  Used - the big 3 have lot's of options, Brand new - you can't overlook the Nissan Titon XD with the Cummins┬« 5.0-liter DOHC 32-valve V8 Turbo Diesel!  One of my BBQ friends has a new one to pull his 40ft camper...  very nice truck

I bought an 04 F-250 SD  Diesel last June in N.H.  I bought it from the original owner up there because they are a cheap state and only use sand/salt mix in the winter.  The body is in great shape underneath with some bubbles on the rear fender flares. It turned 96k on the way home . It is the 4door extra cab model with the 6' 10" bed. Auto 4 speed , and the 6.0 diesel. The 03 / 6.0 gave it a bad rep and got better every year till 07 and the change in 08 .  Knowing the issues with the 6.0 ahead of time I still chose this truck because of the mileage , condition , and its set up for 5th wheel or goose neck , but simply its reliability after the issues are resolved . I saved over 5k going there Vs. the same truck here in Cromwell , similar miles , but underneath was beat ! Yes I had to get ahead of the Ford issues , but I did the work myself and only spent 1300 to do the work and did it in my driveway. Including what I spent for the upgrades , it was still 5/6k less than book. I get 20 mpg highway at mostly any speed and a combo of 15/17 no matter how you drive. For having 700 FT/LBS you will be happy. The 07 / 6.0 had less issues then they changed to the 6.8 I believe. After 07 there are more electronics and harder to get around them. A diesel cost more $ per mile , but towing anything let alone my Jeep , is no longer an issue. This response is on FORD as thats what I know . Ive heard the Duramax has overheating issues when modified and we all know the Dodge has the best engine in the world but cant keep its sheet metal together for more than 5 yrs.  Hope this helps.    FjR68

I have a dodge I'm looking at a Chevy I will never own a Ford again

My first new truck was a GMC 1500 with a 350.  It was the bigest pile I've EVER owned.   I bought it just before I left the Air Force and towed my Chevelle from CA.  I went to work at Scranton Motors in Vernon as a mechanic till I got into a Telecom job.  I was the ONLY mechanic driving a GM, they mostly drove Fords and Toyotas.  They warned me what was going to happen to my truck. And it all happened.   12k, ball joints.  35k, valve seals.  50k rear main seal.  Plus electrical  issues  galore.  NO HEAT, FROZE MY ASS OFF IN THE WINTER!  I traded it in at 35 when the valve seals went.

Best Truck I ever owned, was my 95 F-150.  Had thar truck 17 years and all I ever did to it was replace a cracked exhaust manifold.

My F250 has been great so far.  It's a workhorse but I have had some minor issues.
I needed a 3/4 ton to pull the jeep and camper but for an occasional jeep tow vehicle and commuter, I would stick with a half ton.  The new F150s are a little too nice.  I like the Dodge, but keeping sheet metal up north is a problem.

Don't waste your money on new.  Stay away from the Titan Diesel.  I've spoken to a few owners down here and they hate them.  One was going back to the Dodge and the other back to a Ford.

I'll never own another Chevy,  unless I buy another Chevelle.

Chevy definitely hit a rough patch for a while. But the LS engines are amazing if going with gas. Just stay far away from the 5.3s with DOD!!!! That motor is given entire engine line a bad name.

I like dodge trucks.  Not cause of any capability or lack there of.  Mostly cause I know them pretty well plus cheap to buy.  I only drive em 1k to 2k per year so lifespan and durability,  ehh whatever.

Well, I've owned each brand. I tend to lean Chevy and Dodge. I find the Fords hard to work on, but that's just probably me.

I have had two F150's back in the day. Couldn't beat a 302 or the 300 6. Those days are long gone. As far as rot goes, don't think any one is better than the other with the crap they use on the roads. It's just too corrosive.

Once I have Yoda done, the Dodge is coming off the road for surgery. I'll get a sold year back on a Chevy gasser. Ask me in a year...

Dodge. Magnum engines are good, based on some really old and proven architecture, hemi is nice, most Ive heard tick but live on, hemis do cost more to maintain, dodge trans for a while werent up to the task but lately have been doing much better. Not a fan of the rotory dial gear select and driving them, it seems like everything is a far reach from the drivers seat. All seem decently powered
Ford. 5.4 in a 250 doesnt cut it. Find the newer gas motor and it will be fine. I believe last with solid axles up front, dont know if its still this way but a lot of them, step one for spark plugs is pull the cab. Seem to take abuse the best but thats known so a second hand may have been beaten hard
Chevy. 6.0 and 6.2 are great motors being an LS. 4l80E will live just as long as the motor if serviced regularly.  Interiors tend to have rattles, but have improved over time, rust was bad until 2006 when it started getting better. Well maintained seem to be the most comfortable for daily driving and long distance travel.

Just my opinon.
I have no idea what I'm doing... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

VOTED!

We love our Dodge. Steve wants to upgrade to a dually (sp?) within the next couple of years. My suggestion, get the full-size cab (4 full size doors);  it makes everything easier.

Good luck!!

I really dig my 1999 Dodge Ram 2500. No major issues (knock on wood). Pretty much just maintenance and wear items other tahn the steering. They are infamous for having loose steering. I added a bracket to the steering box, and it's way better. The V10 pulls very strong, but I wouldn't recommend it. Not because of the 8.8 MPG I get towing, but apparently they stopped making parts for that motor and they are getting hard to find. I'm starting to get bad rust bubbling on the front fenders, but this was not driven much in the winter. Many Dodge's are much much worse.

Don't know your price point but an option could be a Chevy Vmax. Think of it as a "heavy half". Don't quote me exactly but I believe  it's a 1500 with a HO 6.0, 4l80, big brakes and a 14 bolt. So it's having 1500 comfort but tows like a 2500.

My 2014 2500 Ram pulls awesome with the 6.4Hemi.
It gets better gas miles towing,  then the new F250/350 get just driving.   And it's 18/19 on the highway because it will deactivate 4cyls.

And you only get the fancy gear dial selection if you get the fancy Limited Editions.

If you use fall crawl tow rigs as a basis of a decision

- almost all diesels
- Dodge was #1
- ford #2
-chevy #3

- almost all were extended cab or 4 door
- all dodges had rust
Sometimes I get to drive Becca's Jeep
