My jeep sucks
« on: September 22, 2017, 11:41:11 AM »
pulled in the driveway yesterday and it died out of no where

drove to work today, engine hiccuped like it wanted to die then continued the journey

first thought was fuel pump or ignition switch. ruled out ignition temporarily since jiggling the key dosnt kill it. also drove to work with only the key not the ball of keys.

fuel pump is original but when it died it wasnt a starving the fuel kind of die

crank position sensor ? Would it restart like normal if the sensor was fawked ?

Maybe an intermittent cps?  I’ve seen them act up if they get covered in oil from a leak.  Maybe a bad ground somewhere?

I had that happen to 4.0 in my YJ.  Thought it was the CPS or coil (or coil wire), could be the ECM too.  I replaced the coil & wire and it seemed to go away.  Would always start right up after cutting out.  Carry a spare CPS just in case

when i built the frame the crank position sensor was not on my mind...

To pull the sensor out of the bell housing, i will need to cut a hole in the floor.

I can barely reach my hand up there.

Im glad to know im not the only one with this issue

When Masers XJ wouldn't start at the MW trip 2015, he said it ended up being the coil. We tested for spark and got spark, but I guess it wasn't enough. The irony is that Ron had a spare coil and it would have been a 10 minute fix, or even a 10 minute shot in the dark. We ended up changing the CPS, but that wasn't it.

This wasn't intermittent though.

so maybe:
coil
cam position sensor
crank position sensor

I don't think failing fuel pump would be so completely intermittent.

Check for frayed wires on the back of the head. Change the coil first  then the cps then the fuel pump then the ecm

My YJ acted like that and was cps. Try getting at it from underneath believe it or not. Can be done from up top using the force. However you may have the motor further back than stock.

doubtful, the motor is so tight to the firewall, the back of the head will hit if it drops at all.

This is how I have always done it in my YJ and all the XJ's. About 3 ft of extension and a swivel on the end. Works every time once the transmission is dropped a couple inches.
