Thanks in advance

Two answers to the same question...

For break in of new 4.56 gears follow the manufacturer's break in:  varied MPH, Miles, Heat cycle and use conventional dino gear oil for break in...  Drain the break in oil then fill with your favorite synthetic and drive for a 100 miles, then drain it and put the final fill of your favorite synthetic (I prefer Royal Purple since we use it for everything at work, but Mobil 1 is OK...  I personally stay away from Redline)

For longevity on the road (or wheeling) with 4:56 and a limited slip or locker synthetic works.  If you have leaky axle seals stick with dino oil since you will have to change it after every wheeling trip with a water crossing

I can't think of any reason that the ratio makes a difference on what oil to run.

Dyno is fine as long as you change it as your driving habits dictate.

I saw somewhere on the internet that if you have air lockers, use dino not synthetic.

This is what I do!  Except the change often part.  If it's not contaminated, I don't change it on a schedule.

I use cheap oil also and just check it from time to time. My rear axle has 360k on it, although the old gear set was definitely pretty loose... My front axle with the same mileage is in great shape still, just running cheap Dino oil.

Unless you are running a LSD diff, any oil will do.

I ran Valvoline, worked great. We go through water and mud, it gets in. Why waste $$$ on expensive stuff thats gonna get ruined quick

As far as weight, I have found heavier oil makes my auto lockers behave better on the street.

I  always run full synthetic in my engines, until they leak too bad to handle it.  Then I switch over to Quaker State Dino oil.

An old timer told me that Quaker State oil has more paraffin in it than other oils and if you have a leaker it will make a difference.  It really does!

On a motor with over 200K that means less leaks.

Gorilla said it best , Heavy oil makes the auto lockers work better and smoother. Ive been using 85/140 in my whole drivetrain for 15 yrs. We dont do normal driving , even if you only do greens and some blues. We work our stuff to death. "Brand"  Thats just guess work ! What you saw your father using. Whats on sale. Im a Pennzoil guy and you will never change my mind. Ive seen the inside of Engines,Trans.T-Cases, and diffs. They dont lie if you really look.  Changing your oil is cheap insurance to longevity.  FjR68
