Angry Sparrows
« on: January 01, 2018, 09:05:38 PM »
Pretty sure I already know the answer to this and kicking myself for not figuring it out last week when I was on vacation rather than tonight, but I'm pretty certain the sound I've been hearing that I thought was something engine and cold related is actually a driveshaft on it's way out.

Tonight I verified that I still hear it rolling along with the engine shut off.  Now that it's gotten worse this week it sounds like the angry sparrows to me.  If it wasn't so cold to be working outside, and I wasn't so busy right now I'd try pulling a driveshaft to see if I could narrow it down.  I did hit the joints on the front of the shaft tonight with some silicone spray to see if that would help identify where it was coming from.  No change after that.  Didn't get to trying the rear yet.

Tomorrow I'll work on arranging to get it looked at.

Any words of wisdom?

Yank the front shaft then take it for a spin. See what happens. Cant do the rear in yer case yet without an sye. Might help a lil.
I have no idea what I'm doing... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

In this weather I'd wait until it warms a bit. Hate working outside in the cold...

That's my biggest issue right now. The cold.

If it turns out to be the front there isn't any reason it can't be driven for a while with no front shaft correct? Thinking of what my options might be once I confirm which it is.

I need to get on this but the cold is sapping my drive to work outside. It's getting more insistent sounding but also could just be louder with the extreme cold this week.

Rather than remove the whole front driveshaft can I safely disconnect it at the pumpkin and tie it up out of the way to see if the noise goes away? Internet wisdom seems to say yes, but I'm concerned about making sure it's secure up there.

That’s a last ditch get off the trail and get home move, I wouldn’t drive around with it like that, could slip it’s splines forward, drop the back half of the shaft and destroy your transfer case. Best to spend the 20 mins freezing your ass off with a halogen light providing warmth and pulling the shaft completely. It’s gonna be in the 40s and even 50 degrees next week.

Yeah, that's about what I was thinking. I'll take the time to do it right. It's the first time I'll take the shaft off so thinking the skid plate is coming down too so I don't mess up a bolt trying to go in from the back.

I should be at breakfast tomorrow in Cromwell. I'll probably see if someone there can take a listen and confirm that I'm hearing what I think I hear.

That's how I made it from year 2.5 to year 3.5.  I would get to trail head, bolt it back to axle, and remove again at end of day...  it'll be fine tied up to the frame or motor mount or something...
