Kerosene
« on: January 08, 2018, 02:04:13 PM »
I am looking for Kerosene that you would find at the pump. I have searched the local area with out any luck? I am in Glastonbury area willing to travel to a point. I know I can get it at Home Depot for 10.00 a gallon. hopefully someone knows of somewhere local.

There is kerosene at the pump at Ive's Bros Oil company in Willimantic and at the Shell Station on RT 6 in Andover - both are a bit of a drive for you

I believe Paul and Sandy's in East Hampton sells Kerosene  (*At least they used to*) If they still do it's right at the front of the store.

I also think both the Citco on 16 and the one on 66 in East Hampton sells it.

And when I lived in Newington, the Hess on the Berlin Turnpike near Ruth Chris used to sell it ( though that was Years Ago).

I'll check on my way home, I think the Hess in Portland has it, if I recall correctly, it's on the side of the station near the air.   and I go by the Topaz station on 66 in Portland across from the IGA, I think they have it also.

Oh and I think the Citco on 66 in Portland/Cobalt (Next door to where Protech used to be) has it.  I think It's next to the Fleet Diesel pump off to the right hand side of the lot where you go around back for the the car wash...

Shell station in Andover is home heating oil. I made that drive on Sat...

Portland is definitely the closest. Thanks guys I picked up a kerosene heater to work on the jeep in the winter, never in my mind did I think it would be this difficult to find Kerosene. I remember when I was younger it was pretty much at every gas station. I did read you can use Diesel as long as you add an additive. I am kind of skeptical on doing that.

Yeah you can use diesel in that, but put a little Diesel Supplement and a bottle of Iso Rubbing Alcohol in your 5 gal diesel can.

If you don't, it'll burn okay until the cloth wic soots up, the additive and alcohol keep it from sooting up the wic.

Xtramart in Ashford still has it. I used to get it all the time for a Kero heater. Loved that thing.

I ran a Kerosun heater just like that style in my apartment for years, and in my cabin until I put in the wood stove.  No problem getting kerosene in the Winsted area at the pump.  I can't figure out why it is so much more expensive than diesel.  They have really short hoses on the pump so you can't fill a car or truck.

From someone who knows absolutely nothing about heaters, can you run these heaters safely indoors without the risk of dangerous fumes?

Yeah, but to me the Kerosene stinks more than burning the ULS Diesel with Iso in it (either that or I just like the diesel smell better).  Plus the Diesel is cheaper and throws more BTU than the Kero.

I have one you can have for free...  Found one more kicking around after Draz snagged what I thought was the last one...  We used them for years as space heaters for the bedroom hallway, front porch, barn, etc...   Kerosene was around $2.50 back then... (for the bedroom one we always had a CO detector - never tripped)
