a friend has a 92 xj high miles. 200k range. the jeep sat for a few years. built it up for his son. first car thing. third trip out, a high way trip. it wont shift out of first and revs high to move. fluid is new, level is full and not burnt. could it be the transmission cotrol module?

XJ auto's shifting is computer controlled.all four gears plus lockup TC.  If it won't shift, it's something with the computer, sensors or wiring.

Not neccesarily.  Those things control solenoids inside the trans to control the hydraulics inside.

well, we replaced the tranny with a good used one. and still no good. it has first and reverse like before. still won't shift into other gears. beaker is it the pcm?

Probably computer problem, could be wiring too. The computer is on the knee bolster (section that the ash tray is in) on the passenger side dash 6-12 inches away on the right from the ash tray. To get access, take all the screws out of the knee bolster thing (there is one hidden behind the ash tray) and pull it out, you'll see the computer bolted to the back side. It says aisin warner on it's side (same aisin warner as the tranny).

Naxja had a whole bunch of stuff on wiring, there's an ATSG manual link in there too. It should have a good amount of info on diagnosing tranny problems.

If you want to make a switch box, Just remember, it's easy to break things since you can drop it into first at highway speeds with a switch box. Can stick it in fourth at 2 miles an hour and cook the torque converter too.

I had the same problem when I had my '90 XJ. The dealership swapped in a new sensor. Definately a computer/sensor issue - I remember there was a TSB from Jeep a while back... Hope that helps....
