Economic Assessment
By: EC4WDA
2005 EC4WDA Northeast 4WD Economic Impact Survey
Instructions & Statement of Purpose
We, as 4-wheelers, face many hurdles when negotiating with both private landholders and public land managers. In addition to our attempts at warding off the notion that 4-wheelers are not much more than a good imitation of Mad Max in the forest, we face much opposition with regard to the economic value we bring to communities. Many who are not familiar with our sport are unaware of the amount of money spent by 4-wheelers in local communities where trails are located, and because of this feel that we bring more work and not more value to their communities. The non-wheeling community is not aware that most of us have a tendency to empty our wallets at the mere sight of a new or interesting vehicle modification, which in turn, supports many businesses. This survey is aimed at gathering data related to the spending habits of those involved in organized 4-wheeling. The data collected from this survey will be sorted and complied into a document that is both easy to read and that shows exactly how 4-wheelers benefit the economy of our local communities and those in which we travel. When the economic impact report is completed, it will be distributed to our members. This information can (and should) be used when dealing with land managers. Remember, in the political world, money talks! The report will be formatted in a professional manner that will be appropriate for distribution to non-members and/or non-four wheelers, and will be available to all participating clubs on the internet and via hard copy.
To help control costs, this survey is being initially distributed through the East Coaster. All members should receive a copy of the survey; copies will be sent to other area clubs in the states of CT, IN, MA, ME, NH, NY, NJ, OH, PA, DE, MI, MD, VT and RI. If you are a member of a non-EC4WDA club, please forward a copy of this survey to that club and request their participation.
Any and all information obtained by this survey will be used for no other purpose than to gather necessary information to be used in our final economic impact statement. No information, other than the final impact statement, will be made available, distributed or sold to any organization.
Instructions for filling out survey
It is very important to be as accurate as possible with your answers to the questions posed in this survey, but it is not necessary to provide every answer to the exact penny. For example, if you know you spent $9.95 per month on motor oil, you don't need to write in $119.40, an answer of $120 spent annually is acceptable. While we don't want to inflate our spending habits, it also important not to omit many of the smaller items we purchase; a $5.00 purchase may not seem like much, but it certainly adds up if 2,000 people each spend $5.00. Some of the questions in the survey are 'what if' questions; we realize that you will have to guess at what you might spend on certain items, please be as honest as you can when answering questions about what you WOULD spend.
Part of the survey asks about your household income; some members, understandably, expressed a reluctance to provide such personal information. Although we do ask questions with regard to your income, to maintain and protect our members' privacy, your name and address are not included on the survey itself. At the bottom of this page is a section requesting your name and address. Please fill this section out and mail it in. If you are concerned about privacy, please mail this section in a separate envelope. We do not need to know which survey belongs to you, but we do need to know who filled out a survey. Although it is unlikely, in the event that our results are questioned by any other agency, we will need to provide a list of those that responded to the survey for verification. The surveys are not numbered or coordinated in any way that would allow us or anyone else to 'match' the survey to your name. Demographic information will be compiled using your zip code only, which is requested at the very beginning of the survey.
Please mail your complete survey to: EC4WDA Survey, c/o Bruce Conroy, PO Box 4142, Yalesville, CT. 06492
If you have any questions about how to fill out the survey, how the data will be handled once we receive it, or any other questions or concerns, please contact Bruce Conroy at 203-294-0574 or OrganizeorDie24@snet.net or Dave Brill at 203-269-1317 or E4WBrill@aol.com
Note: 'trail rig' was used as the name for the vehicle you use to participate in off-road excursions. Your 'trail rig' is any vehicle that you take off road, whether it be a daily driver or a dedicated trail vehicle.
