i have an 89 yj with a 2.5l 4cyl. A few months ago i replaced the starter on it, and not too long after that every once in a while i would drive it, shut it off, and then it would turn over but not start. The first few times is happened i waited a while and then it would start just fine. Well i went out to eat one night and guess what, it wouldnt start. So after a little while a guy who used to have a cherokee with the same problem told me it was most likely the started soleniod. So i stuck a screwdriver inbetween the posts and it fired right up. The next day i took the solenoid off and cleaned up the terminals to get rid of the corrosion. After i put it back together it worked fine. It sat for 2 months and then i started driving it agian on saturday. This after noon i went to go to the store and once agian, it turns over but doesnt start. I went to auto zone to get a new solenoid, which is a motorcraft starter solenoid, i came home put it in and it still wont start...so if anybody has had this problem, or knows what could be causing this problem, please let me know...i was thinking that maybe its the coil, but the haynes manual says that you cant test it without some tool, and auto zone doesnt carry it...

Sounds like you still have a bad connection somewhere, clean everything again.

Check the grounds too, it's very important. Those ground wires aren't there for no reason.

Or maybe the starter motor brushes or on their way out or it's time for new starter.

That special tool wouldn't happen to be an amperage draw tester now would it?

the starter was just rebuilt, i just found out i am getting spark, but no fuel. I sprayed some carb cleaner in her and she fired right up for about 2 seconds then she died. I can hear the fuel pump kicking on so im assuming that it is ok, but what else could it be, a clogged filter? If its the filter how come it only does this every so often and runs fine when its not acting up? Also, when i try to start it and i stop turning it over, my gas pedal moves twice and i know that there is some sort of sensor attached to the throttle body that stops the throttle cable from going below idle, could that be the problem?

Never mind all the little stuff, now it sounds like fuel pump problem or a bad relay for such. I know you can hear it but have a friend spray some carb clean in there repeatedly when you get it running, does it stay running? If not then it's something else too.

i had somebody turn it over while i sprayed carb cleaner and it only ran when i was spraying carb cleaner

I still say replace the fuel pump, but I'm not there to look at it and figure out whats really wrong with it.

so i went out this morning, and it fired right up!!! when i got to work i replaced the fuel filter, i dont think thats was the problem, but since i had it i figured it wouldnt hurt, and up till now, no more problems, but i still would like your inputs

well i just left a softball game and once agian, it wouldnt start. So i was trying to feel around the top of my gas tank to see if i could feel where the wiring harness plugs in and make sure it was connected good and i stumbled across a vaccuum line on the passenger side, i think it was routed over my wheelwell for some reason, anyway its connected to a piece of plastic thats covered by a big rubber boot which reduces its size to about 5/8 hose, which was broken and full of mud, so i disconnected the vaccuum line and she fired right up... does anybody know what this piece is or what its supposed to hook up too? It almost looks like a big pcv valve
