Hi all, heres a link to my latest build. At this stage it would be nice mto install a 4 link front and rear but I'm not smart enough to design and build one myself. Does anyone know any gurus lthat would like to build and design and build one for me?  Jeff      508-764-8168      http://www.bulltear.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=33138#33138

Hmmm, planes in your garage.....Im thinking north central Ct?
Where are you located?

Hello I live in Woodstock and my hanger and business is located in Southbridge, MA. I could probably make a 4 link but after looking at 4 link calculators then measuring I can only do so much and I appreciate the times a specialist must be utilized to get the full ability of a high tech suspension. My forte lies in engines and running gear. I think I'll give Clayton a call but don't see a CJ product listed, plus the fact I have a aftermarket chassis and offset pumkins on the Dana 44's.          Jeff

Yea.....It would most likely be custom from Clayton, great stuff though....
So your in Mass., I was off.....
You building this for the street or the trail?
Not sure if your going to get desired spring rating if for the street, the
squat factor under accell might be hard to tune......
Whats your est. hp when complete?
44's are up to the job.....
Ever consider stretching the wheel base?
But really, street or trail?

Detour!!!    Your a pretty smart guy!!!!  Finally someone understands!!!!  Tuning a 4 link for this application is very high tech stuff with a great knowlege required by the driver/mechanic to make a 4 link work optimally. At this point I don't have that kind of knowledge, and it takes a long time to be proficient to make the adjustments to the suspension. This is going to be a street/sand drag/ trail. Without N2O the engine dynos 742 Hp @ 5200 and with the juice  938 hp. Greg Hunt of Kiwi Engineering in Old Saybrook tuned it and told me if this engine was in a Javlin or AMX it would be a 8 sec car. The 44's aren't the optimal axle at this point but I havent broken anythig yet. The rear axle has Strange/Currie axles and a Eaton ELocker and the front is stock I run a BW 1339 QT which I think helps to share the load. Someday after the budget recoups a set of Dynatrac axles will be added. The wheelbase is streched to 98 inches now running Waggy springs. I've gotta get this back together to make the Monson Mass hill climb first race of the season. Plus I'd like to run against a guy buy the name of Fuzz 401 from the Bulltear board in the quarter mile( he runs a 401 in a CJ7). This rig is not for hard core rockclimbing as I have way too much money in it to bash it all to h*ll .I'd have to put a fuel cell in it to run Southwick but I may. So I'll give Clayton a call today to see if they really can help me.                                  Jeff

Jeff,

I dont think Fuzz will be able to keep up with you.  He is running  13.618 @ 95.76  but But i think he is still in the 400hp range and running in 2 wheel drive.

Have you done anything to that QT t-case yet?  Do you expect it to hold up to the power you are attempting to put through it?

Here is Fuzz's jeep for others, I think i have posted it here before

Im sure Clayton can help, most likely have to bring it to him.....
I'd keep that thing away from Southwick, your building a straight
liner, not a woopty-do cornering rig.

Heres what I would do.......Do the 4 link, but use airbags instead of
springs.......with proper notes, you could dial it in for max/consistant
traction where ever you take it thru-out the year......and next.
Using coils, your going to loose spring rate over the course of the season,
airbags can be filled with nitrogen and tweaked/tuned thru-out the day.

If you need a hand finding quality airbag sources, let me know....
If you'd like to put a D60 in the rear of that, one might be coming up
for sale here...
You might want to also consider a glass tub, your gonna knock the bondo
right out of that steel one in just a couple of passes......

Hey Detour, I chatted with Clayton for about half a hour today. He's a nice guy very straightforward, quite a chatter. I had him link here and then to Bulltear to view my pics. His suggestion was a coil over with a "Y" arm front with a panhard and a straight 4 link rear coilover. He said the coilover would be very adjustable and he would come up to the airport so we could dial it in on the runway ( a mile of straight, 150 foot wide asphalt is very good). The coilover shocks could be adjusted for slight variables of spring compression loss. I'm probably gonna drive or fly down on Friday to visit his facility and get some inside scoop. His ballpark figure to set up the chassis was around 6K   I also like your idea about the airbags but then again thats a subject I'm not up to speed on but I will investigate further. The problem is I am not only looking for straight line action but the ability to have suspension of a desert racer at 100 MPH plus the way Clayton descibes it sounds like it could be possible. I realize that all vehicles are a compromise, my thoughts at this time is a quarter miler/sand drag/semi road racer one to give a Viper, Corvette  or a 426 Roadrunner a hell of a run to 100MPH after that I have to change my diaper  :frown:  The only downside is the amount of money to spend to get there without knowing the outcome of the setup before hand, Clayton said he has never done this type of setup to a CJ7 Matkins chassis before. With the amount of cash I have invested it this rig so far I could have bought 2 brandy new Unlimiteds so far might as well go for the third. The new aluminum body from Matkins is on it's way so I won't have to worry about Bondo and I still have to stretch the 'glass nose 31/2" to accommodate the new ZM Jeeps Be Cool radiator, AC condensor, and oil cooler. If you have any suggestions about the suspension setup keep the ideas coming and if that Dana 60 has a offset pumpkin I'll take it!      And Paul I think Fuzz could break a 100 MPH if he would just drop the windshield a Engineering buddy of mine did a coefficient of air molecules hitting a CJ windshield and the drag was staggering .                                   Jeff

Oh boy just when I think I got it covered someones got a even better idea, thats the way this project started 4 yrs ago I just wanted a "old school blower setup" I was gonna go dual carbs, magneto ignition, a little warmed over 401 just to learn about supercharging. What it has turned into was a ECM controlled 16 injector bugcatcher with a Moldex crank, Carillo rods JE pistons, now,  I'm on a first name basis with Richard Iskydarian, Craig at BDS,Bill at Dyers, Phil at Matkins. Anyhow ok,  so the question is do the bags take the place of the springs? Is a convential triangulated4 link? or long arm? So many questions , any idea on where to start?        Jeff

for about $700 per you can go all out with nitrogen shocks...easier than bags, just way more money.

Detour, I've been busy for a few days and haven't been around. Been checking on the bag idea and yes I think I may go that way in a little while kinda goofing with the rear for now. N2 is no problem for me as I have 2 tanks at the hanger I use for aircraft struts and jet tires. I looked at airbags at www.ridetech.com and actually looks pretty easy my biggest part as it was before is designing the iron for the links. All this 3 link and 4 link stuff, ladder bars. wishbone style, long arms, articulation and squat makes my head spin. For now for the front I'll stick with the leafs as I have run the particular 6 inch lift for 25 years and I at least know what I'm doing there. As I have found with anything I do I need to get more edification with suspensions before I can even talk  intelligently about whats happening. ( I don't even know what a 700 dollar N2 shock is.)  Jeff

Hi, I've been doing QT's since 1975 and never had a problem I couldn't fix , it'll take all I can give it and more. I think it is a much understood setup. I've had the system on the trail when I hit the juice many times and overhauled a while ago and everything was fine except for the chain which I try to replace every 30K miles. I only wish the newest generations would be so bulletproof. On highway it's fantasic and offroad too, the biggest drawback is the offset pumkin, which brings me to my latest quandry I'm thinking a triangulated adjustable ladder bar set up in the rear with the central attach"point" a 360 degree swivel joint (kinda like a double u joint on a preloaded roller bearing shaft) at the apex of the ladder bars attached to the tubular transfer case mount. ( just thinkin)              Jeff

Ok I did! So I was looking around today and who makes a decent computer software package for a 4 link suspension?, Maybe I'll start on my own. I already spent 200 dollars at Amazon today for books on design and understanding suspensions.  Jeff

Welcome,    Jeff

Ok so after several weeks of initial study, he's my plan I'm going to build the rig completely first on leafs .Then for "Stage II" next winter I will do all my weight and balance measurements, (just like when I weigh airplanes on scales) CG heights, rear and front axle weight transfer at 20,30,45 and 60 degree approach angles front and rear, side loads right to tip points on tire loads. (good thing I have a Volvo 75 loader) Then I got Milkens book, Carrolls tune to win, Mitchells software. Thanks Paul for the calculator I used it but don't find it to be sophisticated enough for my needs for various configurations ( it's a great static program but changing angles and side loads require too much time and effort) then I think I will build a compromise prerunner/monster truck setup roughly 50 inch bottom straight link (my initial thinking) with a Nitroshock ,air/oleo or coilover Universalairsuspension setup. I'll make the purchase soon on the shocks so I can Fab (or have fabbed) the shock mounts now as I need new shock mounts by stretching the wheelbase to 100 inches now. I'll make the shock mounts able to move for now as opposed to a rigid mount for the link setup. I am finding that my self imposed schedule is behind now and if I spend the time and effort to design a suspension based on "paper math" of all the supposed weights of all the installed equipment at all the moment arms I maybe very wrong in my assumptions. So this is how I see it, any input/flaming?

As for the rear end I've had this Dana 80 hanging around which I'll shorten and relocate the pumpkin for the QT when I do the link suspension

Yep, gonna be a DD too and gonna take it on trail rides  gettin tired of watch folks running gearing but no HP gonna show what HP and torque can do  Jeff
