Just wondering if one is better than the other in your opinions.   My old Xj had the 8.25 and I couldnt break it. This spring I want to ditch my D35
and replace it with something stronger. The ford 8.8 is not an option that Im interested in. Doing the fab work for the mounts for either is no problem for me.

The 44 is the better axle. It doesn't rely on C-clips to hold the axleshafts in, has better ground clearance, has a lot more lockers available for it at lower prices, and can run gears higher than 4.56.
Don't get me wrong, the 8 1/4 is a pretty tough axle especially in 29 spline, but if you're going to build one of those two, the 44 is the better choice. If it's for your TJ, just keep your eyes open for a 44 out of a sahara, or rubicon with the factory brackets on it already. This way, you just bolt it right in. If the gears aren't the ratio you are looking for, call Pete at CT axle service. He does great work. click on the banner at the top of the page.
