90 XJ- Bearings or UB-Hubs?

My friend Bob has a 90XJ and his friends think he may need new bearings in the front end.  Does this year have Unit Bearing hubs like the 98 we just did or are they like Franks YJ with regular bearings?

His brother is the one who just dropped another U-Joint and his 4wd isn't working now!

I think Jeeps have something against his family! :rotflmao:

Anyway We will be doing the brakes on the XJ and maybe checking the YJs 4wd this Sunday.  Maybe a small wrench fest again at the KakiRubi/Jeepinmax Garage!  If anybody wants to give a hand, they are more than welcome!

We Still have some Beer left! :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes:

I thought early XJ's had standard non- unit hub bearings.

Here's the source

However, maybe early XJ's had unit hubs?  Too many sources of information  :swear_mad:

part number #36 on the following link

According to that link it looks like the pre 87's actually had CV axle shafts

Bearing unit (roller) part number 5300 0228, model years 1984-90
Bearing unit (ball) part number 5300 7463, model years 1991- 93
Bearing unit part number 5300 7449AB, model years 1994- 98/99
Bearing unit part number 5016 458AA, modle year 1999
Bearing unit part number 53007 449AC, model year 2000-01 (except 00 4WD RHD)

I have some more info -(credit goes to XJ-Maki)

"There were 3 different unit hubs used for XJ D30's:

84 - 89
90 - 99 1/2 (with composite rotors)
99 1/2 - 01 (with cast rotors)

There were 3 different rotors used for XJ D30's:

84 - 89
90 - 99 1/2 (composite)
99 1/2 - 01 (cast)

And 2 different knuckles & calipers:

84 - 89
90 - 01

The unit hub has to match the rotor, the rotor has to match the caliper, and the caliper has to match the knuckle...so you could use an 01 rotor with an 00 hub in a 95 axle with 91 calipers...but you can't mix anything 89 or earlier with anything 90 or later (unless you swap knuckles) and you've got to be careful when dealing with the 99-01 years"

Draz - it's all set for 11AM+ glad to have you aboard!  Of course anyone else in need of some wrenchin' can stop by

Once again it was fun wrenching today.  I had to leave early.  Found a few xtra problems to fix while we were at it.  The unit hub was REALY toasted!  The inner bearing race had come off and it looked like some balls were missing.  The front end is buttoned up and they are still there working on the rear brakes and lines...
Hopefully they finished up and are kicking back a few beers  :beers:

heres some picks
