Pete,
ZJ models '93 thru '98 came with the followoing transfer case models:
Keep in mind, this info is out of a "Haynes" manual.
NP231 - Part Time t/c w/ low range reduction gear
NP242 - Full & part time t/c w/4 operating ranges providing both 2wd and full time 4wd, has locking mechanism for undifferentiated 4wd in high & low ranges.
NP249 - All-the-time t/c w/ 2 operating ranges and a neutral position. The 2 ranges are 4 high & 4 low. Torque is distributed to front & rear axles thru a differential and viscous coupling in the t/c. Also equip'd w/ low range gear reduction for off road.
FrankTheDog is on the money.
Occationally I've seen t/c cases jump out of 4LO if you don't use it a lot. When I first bought my jeep I couldn't use the 4 wheel drive at all. The previous owner never shifted it out of 2 wheel. Once I started exercising it, it's worked fine ever since.Â
Try shifting into neutral at a full stop, then engage 4LO. If it still doesn't go in you may have to recalibrate the linkage adjustment - it's easy to do. Sometimes it's just a matter of lubing or tightening it. Call me if you need the procedure. All you need is a 1/8" shim.
If that doesn't work you may have to check your shift fork for cracks, worn inserts or binding. I've never had one apart so I can't offer help there.
The New Process metal tag is easy to get at on the t/c. Is yours still attactched and can you read the model number off of the plate?
Good luck.
