A Little More Traction Plan B

Plan A was selectable lockers front and rear.  This might have been the summer for it but I need to get some transmission work done at some point and that's going to eat up most of the Jeep funds, plus it's just not the time because of current events.  Plan B has always been something like adding a lunchbox or LSD in the front.  Right now there is a Trackloc in the rear.

The 2 choices I've considered for the D30 in the front are:

1. A Powertrax No-Slip, that version of their lunchbox locker is supposed to be a little more street friendly than some of the other options, but aside from that it seems like there are a few other good options in the lunchbox department.

2.  A Detroit Trutrac limited slip.

Price is close enough to not be a deciding factor.  I've been leaning toward the lunchbox side but options are good to have.

It sounds like because of the 3.73 gearing the ring gear needs to come out either way for the cross shaft to clear.  I think the lunchbox I could easily do in the driveway, it sounds like the LSD requires some gear setup that I would have someone else do or at least assist with.

So the real question is if I lock the front what else do I need to do to avoid breaking something.  I'm assuming upgraded axle shafts.  Anything else that I should plan for at the same time?

If anything, I'll probably just rebuild the Trackloc in the rear 44 at some point or replace it with a TruTrac, but that's another project.

Go spartan in the front and Detroit full in the rear, the length of the LJ prevents any of the weird squirrelly behavior of a full locker in the rear. I’ve had that setup for 7-8 years, no problems!

Dont listen to this guy. Only reason he doesn't feel the squirrelliness is he's a squirrely guy

Just lock the front with a spartan locker and wheel like that for awhile

Be aware auto locking the front if you drive it in the snow [emoji3587] It pushes you through turns.

Also, just go with the lunch box if it’s temporary. You won’t have to set up the gears.

I’ve installed several lunchbox lockers and the Spartan was the easiest because of the locking pins.

That’s the reason I’ve always considered a selectable or LSD in the front instead of a lunchbox. I don’t do a lot of snow driving but I do some and I enjoy it, and when I do I like it to be as safe as possible.

It would be temporary. And one of the reasons for considering it, back to the snow, is I’m considering picking up a beater to drive in the winter to reduce the salt on the LJ. So if that happens the only snow driving would be snow wheeling.

So the spartan locker you could install in the spring and remove in the fall. Good time to change some fluid if you have the extra energy. Orrrrrrrrrr Plan A

Yep, I sure could.

Never had an issue with not being able to turn in the snow with the spartan. You just need aggressive enough tires!

I have your old tires.

I have a Detroit automatic locker in the front, If I try to use 4WD in the snow, the front tries to pull me off the right side of the road.  Off road it works great!  Sometimes I get through an entire day without locking the rear...
