ARB Install Questions

We had an ARB locker installed in Holly's KJ.  All the axle work is done- however, now I have to run the airlines and switches.  I didn't spend the $$ on an ARB compressor. I'm going to use the PepBoys compressor many of us use to air-up.  For ARB's - do I really need an air tank?  I assume it's a pretty small volume to actuate the solenoid.

If I do need a Reservoir tank - I assume it doesn't need to be more than 1/2 liter...

If anyone uses an ARB with custom OBA - I'd be interested in your set-up!

That is going to make a world of difference on the trail!!!  Sorry I can't help in that department.  I think XJMark was using an ARB on his front axle before it was Godzilla'd.  Maybe he has some info.

Congrats on the locker Holly.
I saw the KJ sitting there at ctaxle's shop, and I knew something was up.

I have an oilless compressor with a storage tank to fill up my tires, run air tools, and click the ARB in.
The ARB line is on a dedicated diaphragm regulator set at 85#.
It's an easy and inexpensive setup to put together if you already have an air source.
I can help you set it all up, and have most of the fittings and valves in stock.

Where can I go to find an adapter fitting to fit the weird threads on the ARB solenoid (1/8 BSP) to standard NPT?  I couldn't find it at home depot :swear_mad:

which one?  The solenoid can srew into a npt nipple and on the other side of the solenoid the arb adapeter srews in.

It is possible that 1/8" npt nipples can work is you sift through a bunch of them and find one that was threaded further than normal, but you would have only a couple of threads engaged. I went to Allied Industrial Products Inc in New Britain, 365 John Downey Drive.
They carry all hinds of pneumatic and hydraulic fittings. They had a 1/8" bsp to 1/8" npt adapter in stock.

If I'm working in New Britain tomorrow, I'll stop by Allied and pick one up for you.

Mark -please grab two - if you can

my experince with bsp vs npt is that the thread pitch is diffrent and creates more problems then anything.  a lot of people try to use npt fittings on there jcb equipment with nothing but headaches.  i know parker hose and fitting makes adapters and also fairview fittings as well. I would invest in a bsp to npt adaptor to avoid problems down the road

OK - got the ARB plumbed and wired.
Tried it out in the yard and it works!
However the solenoid vent leaks a little when the locker is dis-engaged.  So the compressor cycles a bit.  When the locker is engaged - the compressor doesn't kick on for about 15 minutes (small leak somewhere )

Is this normal for the ARB solinoid to bleed off pressure?  I'm sure with a larger tank I wouldn't notice it soo much

what is the prusser you have going to the arb system. looking at the pics it could be to high. or does the psi switch shut off at 90 psi. i dont think you want more than 90 lbs to the arb and this may be was it is leaking throught the vent

If you have air coming out of the solenoid vent in the off position, you most likely have some crapola stuck inside the valve seats. The valve can't seat correctly, and will cause this.
Just so we are on the same page, you're refering to the vent as the stem that comes up through the soienoid coil and has the thumbwheel screw retainer on the end?

Try disconnecting the locker line off of the solenoid, and click it on and off about 25 times or so with the compresssor on. Hopefully it will clean out. You will be able to tell if it's OK when it's not leaking out of the vent anymore.

Windex makes a great leak detector spray.

Mark - we are on the same page - done the windex - it's a pain to remove the blue line off the solinoid-doesent want to disengage

If it won't come off at the solenoid, pull it off of the axle end, and then try it.
Just be careful to hold the fitting in the axle housing from turning as you're lossening it.

If it's not too much trouble, pull the inlet fitting off and check if there is anything in there first. Loose teflon scraps often are a cause of problems like this.

Thanks Mark - The locker worked great today at Coy - however as the day went on - the compressor cycled every two minutes.  I'll have to re-plumb it permantly (just hobbled it togeter for this weekend)  I'll have to re-think the pipe bomb resivor tank (too much teflon tape connections = many leaks   I think the solinoid valve cleared itself after umteen engagements

PVC, It's good for a few hundred pounds of pressure isn't it?

Just need to mount it where it can't get hit with rocks or heated up by the engine.  Use plenty to that purple adhesive.
