Looks like I have gear lube leaking out of my D30 axle by the knuckle, I'm assuming bad seals? Whats involved here? Do I need any special tools or can I get away with standard wrenchs, jack stands and a diagram?

One other question, anyone know what it costs to have your rotors turned? Waited too long to change the pads in the wife's car one too many times I think. :?

The front axles seals are inside the axle tube by the carrier, I believe. You have to pull the cover and carrier and then you can access the seals. They aren't the easiest to do either, do to the limited space. Oh, I forgot to mention the axle shafts need to be removed which requires from the knuckle out to be removed.. It would be a good time to check the ball joints and u-joints.

knuckle don't need to be removed but the spindle/unitbearing does.

no really that bad but you will need some specialty stuff. What axle do you have? (cj, yj, tj,xj?)

pull off tires, take off caliper, take off rotor, inside knuckle there are 3 12 pt bolts that hold on unit brg, take these out, pull out unit brg and axle shaft:repeat on other side, take off diff cover unbolt carrier caps and remove ringgear and cage assembly, pound out old seals , use big socket or similiar tool to install seal, tool has to be inserted through tube to pound seal into place,( this is provided you have no disconnect in your axle), reassemble axle, make sure youline up carrier caps correctly,(factory marked) or call Connecticut Axle Service for fast courteous service :D :D. pete

I have the same problem in the front.. D44 off a Wagoneer.. on a YJ.. This is out of my league..

I'll be pulling into CTAxle after the next few runs.

Will see you soon!!!

Marty

Oh yeah, I forgot. You mentioned it. Guess the axles and locker can wait till the end of the month.
