I need to replace the torque converter on my trail rig.

Now here is the problem.

My rig is a '88 YJ ... and I believe that the transmission in it is the original transmission, though I'm not 100% possitive on that.

The engine, however, I know if from an '92 or '93 Cherokee (previous owner did the swap)

Which vehicle do I specify when ordering a torque converter?

Thanks in advance,
Al

motor is a ho ... tcase is the 231 ... transmission has no overdrive ... based on some information I got from autozone (torque converter OD, bolt pattern diameter, etc) ... I suspect that the transmission is the '88 wrangler transmission, and that the flex plate from the '88 wrangler was used on the cherokee engine, so that the wrangler torque converter could be reused ...

based on that information, I've ordered a '88 wrangler torque converter ... it should be here tommorow, so I guess I'll find out then if my guesses and assumptions were right or not... :)

Sounds like your on it!

That "no overdrive" is a good clue!!

You would want to order the TC for the transmission.  Seeing as how the TC is part of the transmission, not part of the engine.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'll let you know how I make out tommorow.

I was leaking atf from the bellhousing ... thought it was just the front seal, but when I dropped the tranny, I found a giant crack in the output side of the tc.

well, that's good to hear ...

hopefully when I replace it, it won't quickly happen again.  :)

I'd think there could be three causes of a cracked TC.

Internal defect in TC
Cooling problem
Internal tranny problem.

Use some compressed air and clear your cooler lines (messy), make sure that there's no blockages.
It's easy and cheap to do and elminates a possible cause of the cracked TC.

The only remaining cause would take a lot more effort to check.

yeah, I'm actually replacing the cooler lines when I put the tranny back in.

I'm going to assume that it was just a defect, and wait and see what happens with the replacement.

blow out the cooler as well.you don't want any left over debris.
