Alright all of a sudden on saturday I started having some problems with my tranny

It is an ax-15 and I have been running synchromesh in it.

hard to shift into 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 5th.  almost like something is in the way.

and down shifting from 4th to 3rd it can grind a little

My clutch was low on fluid.  I filled it up and bled it, but no real difference.

any idea or should I start looking for a tranny

does it feel like the clutch is letting off all the pressure, and completely disengaging?  and grinding when going into first?

If the tranny is a 94 or 95, then it should have the external slave?  Does yours?  If so, pull the slave, be sure that the slave is not leaking.  It is actually a plastic piston, and they go bad and weep pretty easy.

yeah external slave cylinder.

I kinda think it isn't the clutch as it has all sorts of other fun symptoms

hard downshifting into 1st, and 2nd  (really hard)  grinds down shifting into 3rd.  rattles when I let off the gas in 5th.

I have to do a little double clutch dance to get it into first or second.  I clutch shift into neutral let the clutch out then press it back in and it someitme goes into 1st or 2nd better.  Makes me think its a tranny issue.

I am gonna try to change the fluid today.  I was thinking about duching it out with 40wt motor oil as well.  so I would drain the fluid.  pour the 40 wt in and run the tranny with the tcase in neutral for a minute.  Then drain that and pour the new synchromesh in it.

I would just change whatever the tranny calls for fluid.  How many miles have you had it for?

If you have no other problems, and can shift fine while double-clutching, it sounds to me like syncroniser rings are starting to ware-out.  I doun't think there's a magic number when it comes to the milage you get out of a tranny.  Depending on how it was driven, it is possible with 120,000 miles or so.  Syncros are a friction generative component and can ware exceleratively if gears are engaged without consideration of staying within reasonable engine RPM ranges, like throwing it into 1st before nearly stopping for example.

yeah i am unsure on the mileage or the treatment of the tranny before I owned it as I swapped it in.

Gonna change the fluid tonight

Double clutching could be the clutch too.

SItting stopped on the side of the road.  Put it in reverse and while holding the clutch down, take it out of reverse and into neutral wait about 10 seconds then try to shift back into reverse.  If it grinds a little then the clutch is grabbing and you likely need a clutch and not a tranny.  If it drops in real smooth then the clutch is completely releasing.

I've never rebuilt a AX15 but most of the sticks I have pulled apart are actually not bad too "rebuild" with new syncro's.

Definately the tranny.

drained the fluid and lots of brass in it

guess its time to find an NV4500.

if anybody knows where there is one around let me know.
