Axle seals

Just got the new axle to replace the "hopefully" bent one. Went to AutoZone (only place open on Sunday), and they said that the rear axle seals are not available for a 2000 XJ. The guy tried to tell me that I shouldn't need new seals because the truck is only a 2000. I'm sorry, I forgot that I have only been a mechanic for the last 9 years. You remove something from a seal, you replace the seal. Anyway, the schmuck told me they can't get the seals. Any ideas? I'm gonna try NAPA tomorrow.

Thing is if the seal wasn't leaking you shouldn't have to replace it, but yeah just about every auto parts place has those in stock.

It's a common part.

I went into AutoZone yesterday with part numbers from their own website and they still had big problems finding me the right parts

All they know how to say is "make and model, please."

When it comes to seals I always buy OEM… the way I look at it, if it is a job that I don’t want to do twice, I buy the right part the first time… and when it is a $5 seal I really don’t care to pay a little more. By the way… we get a (I think) a 20% discount at Executive Jeep

Best example of this, I used to have a killer drive line angle to my rear D-shaft which would kill my slip yoke seal after a few months. I tried Advance, leaked within a month, I tried Napa…. Actually popped out twice… and then I bought the OEM, lasted 6 months…

Napa gave me the wrong seals. Then everything closed at noon on friday. had no choice but to go back to Autozone. Got a different part jockey this time. he actually seemed to want to help. looked all over for the seal. no dice. i noticed on his screen it said the part was not yet available. so i had him check for a 98 instead of a 2000. finally found it. the SEAL was labled a "WHEEL BEARING RETAINING HUB SEAL" WTF!!!!! It's a damn AXLE SEAL!!! When will these dumbasses learn what a part is called. Even when I got the part and was walking out the door, I wanted to kill myself from the headache that damn placed caused. Sorry, end of rant.
