Ok boys and girls, I have decided that since my good Uncle Sam is gonna be paying me and not letting me spend any money for a while it's time to plan and overhaul on my YJ. I have a pretty good idea what I want to do but I'm not sure about my rear axle. I want to run 33s maybe someday 35s with a selectable locker, but the question is do I spend the money to swap out my d35 and if I do, what should I put in it's place

All ideas welcome, it will be a while before I am home to do it so I'll have time to figure it out, just need some help brainstorming.

Just found out I'm limited. I decided to go with the Black diamond XCL lift, I figure I might as well go all out, and coils are sooo cool. but the kit is designed for d35, d44, d60 and ford 9" only. Unless some custom work could be done if there is a better option. Yes Detours this does mean I'll be coming to you with some work, but it'll be next spring before I'm even home to bother you with it.

Early 80's wagoneer axles should be a pretty easy swap (a little welding)  Just got to move the spring and shock mounts.

Set it up spring over and you've got your lift too.

Just need to set up hi steering ($$) to clear the leafs.

Do the wagoneer axles have that crazy six lug pattern?? one of my buddies told me they do. As for the lift and the welding I plan on a coil conversion with the black diamond kit, but Nth degree has a poll up online about what style yj coil conversion they should come out with so they might be an option when I get to it. Either way a lot of welding and customization needs to get done.

If you want coils why not start with a TJ?  It already has them.  Between the lift kits and the price of your truck, would you be able to buy a TJ and a lift kit?

Wagoneers are 6 lug.  Isn't it the same as a chevy 6 lug?

If I had the money again, I would go Ford 8.8, disc brakes, and very strong.  Has a c-clip but if it bothers you that much, they have a fix for that to.  If you break an axle, the disc brakes hold you in anyway.

I went Dana 44 out of an XJ, cheap, easy and still uses Jeep parts.

Wagoneer axles are good for broth front and rear, and make a good option for the front upgrades, yes they are 5 x 5.5 so they are stronger different lug pattern.

So you know, the Warn, oops I mean Black Diamond kit (Purchase by Superlift) is nice, but way over priced.  A better bet is the RE one that is coming out, or the FabTech which use the wave of the future coil overs.

However if I really had the money, I would just go Clayton, who makes a Conversion also.

thanks nomad, until now i didn't know of another option, except the poll on nth degrees website that got my hopes up. but if there are options i'll have to shop around

and I already have the yj with my bumpers, winch, sidekicks, and both tops so I just dont feel like starting from scratch again with a TJ, although i did consider it

i second the 8.8.any suspension that will work on the 9" should work on an 8.8.plus you get to keep your yj bolt pattern.

Where did you find that clayton suspension, I checked their website and didn't see it.

He talks about it in the New section, but he does not list it.  (sort of a coming out soon type thing, from 2 years ago)

However I have talked with him, and seen the kit (at the Jeep Rally) , it is a bastid ZJ kit and they put it on the YJ.  You would have to call for more info.

Cool, thanks. it will be a while before I get to set up the arrangements but it looks like a sweet setup, and its a local buisiness. Not to mention if I'm gonna drop that kind of money I might as well go all out.

if you plan on swapping the front axle go waggy 44s if you don't go 8.8

also  the waggy lug pattern is 6 on 5.5.  This is the same as chevy, toytoa, nissan, iszuzu, etc.

I'm not really sure what I'm doing for axles just yet, but I have about 10 months to go before I actually come home to start the project. I am gonna need new rims and tires anyway so lug pattern is not a huge deal, now that I think about it. I'm just brainstorming right now, the overall idea is to have a streetworthy jeep that is more than capable on the trails, hence where coils come in. once I figure out the suspension and axles, I'll have to start really looking into tires and the works but one thing at a time for now.

Thanks for the suggestions, and if you have any more keep 'em comin'

re run i have an 8.8 with disc set up. needs calipera and discs, but brackets are there. also i have a set of waggy 44's , not sure of the year, ill check. pete

Thanks Pete, unfortunatly it'll be a little while before I can check them out but the 44's sound liike the better plan at this point, I like the idea of adding the strength up front, as well as locking hubs. My only question is width, I read somewhere that the 8.8 is thinner than a d35 which could cause problems, but if the waggy axles are too wide it could also cause me some trouble. Anyway, I'll be in touch and if the axles are still available when I come home for R&R I'll come take a look.

8.8 is a little narrower, but it is still fine

the waggy axles are pertty much an exact match

high pinion Dana 44 from a '79 F250, full float D60.  done, and done.  why waste time with an 8.8?  or a HP D30?  if i had the option of moving leaf perches and welding on shock mounts as opposed to the link brackets and crap such as the ones on my ZJ, well, i'd be a happy camper.  I do regret the HP30 and 8.8 swap, only because it would have cost less for the HP 44 and FF 60 than what it cost me to purchase a HP 30 and 8.8 from the junker.  (hindsight kicks ass!)  It really does depend on local pricing, but i would have been money ahead if I went with the HP44 and 60.  as far as wider axles, of course, the cops are pretty cool out here, they let trucks get away with tires sticking out of the fenders by about a foot, but if you are worried about axle width, just get some military surplus humvee wheels......6" backspacing AND dual beadlock!  8 lug too!  SOLD!  (my next plan, anyways...)  HTH,

Kevin C.

As far as the 44 and 60 I'm not really planning on going that extreeme. My father is one of the cops and as long as I'm mooching off of him when I get home I gotta play by the rules. The 44's will be plenty strong enough, I have decided against the 8.8 just because a set of 44s wil upgrade my front axle too which is a big plus. as far as springover vs. coils I figure why not go all out if I'm gonna redo the suspension I might as well make it as flexy as possible, plus the on road comfort will be there too.

That sure is pudy, but I bet it's all over the road when you hit pavement.
