Axles for the tj??

What axles would be compatable with my 98 tj? What I mean is llike dana 44, ford 9" and junk. What other vehicles have a pretty much bolt them up kind of thing going with the tj, like makes, years and tech garbage like that. Im interested in looking now and maybe finding a good deal that I could use later on down the road. Thanks, Bull.

Ford Explorer 9 inch would be a easy swap.. Get a late 90's one with disc brake and 3.73s, most likely will have a traction device with that gear ratio.

I just recently found a Ford 9" out of a 72' Bronco, almost the same exact width as the TJ axle.

But either way I'm gonna have to make my own mounts for it.

Such as control arm, shock, spring pads and maybe a track bar mount. Haven't decided if I'll Triangulate the rear thus eliminating the need for a track bar.

I also need to completly rebuild it and make it useable by changing the ratio to 4.56:1 as well as put all new bearings and seals in it.

Fixed it for ya'

No other axle other than the XJ front HP Dana 30 bolt right up- any other swap is going to need some welding and 'width adjustments'. Not many other axles out there that are substantially stronger than a TJ Dana 44 that are around that width.

The bigger axles you're looking for- Ford 9s, Dana 60s and Corporate 14-bolts are from 3/4 or 1 ton pickups (mostly) that are much wider. A lot of guys just use the full width axles without chopping them (then use shallow backspaced rims to help keep the wheels somewhere under the fenders).

Passenger or driver's side front diff drop is another consideration. The Ford 8.8" axle is popular because the width is on the ballpark of a TJ axle. YJs can bolt it right on, for the most part.

For junkyard parts, I'd keep my eyes open for front and rear Wagoneer D44s. The diff drop is on the correct side for a TJ and the width is close. Late 70s F Series pickups often had the D44 front and 9" rear, but there's all kinds of odd models and years that are problematic.

If you are gonna go the waggy 44 route, I would go waggy front and isuzu dana 44 rear. The waggy rear 44 aren't that easy to find, but the isuzus are.

they also have disc brakes, 4.10 or 4.30 gears stock, and most likely a tracloc. same width asa waggy axle as well.
