I'm looking at an 89 cherokee with I believe an AW4 auto tranny (4 spd?)attached to the I6. It shifts very high in the rpms. By sound it was shifting from second to third at 4000-5000. Really high. The seller says it's a bad sensor on the tranny. Tells me it's a 100 dollar repair. She seems to know her stuff and her boyfriend does as well. I don't know a thing about it. If thats the case, the rest of the jeep seems pretty tip top. I'll probably buy it. THanks y'all

I think there is cable there also that could cause that problem. Happened to a car I had. Looks like a thick bicycle brake cable, contoled the shifting.

No cable for kickdown on this tranny, as it's mostly electronically controlled. So....no vacuum modulator either.

Sounds like a solenoid or servo sticking. Had the same thing happen with my AW-4 in the 88' XJ, it eventually fixed itself after a fluid change.

You do know thats actually a "Toyota" tranny in there right? Don't ask how much it costs to rebuild one

BTW...me thinks CJRon would know the real answer to the problem with this tranny.
