Looking to purchase the 3.5" YJ kit and rec'd the following:

Here is the information you asked for from JDsOffroad.com:

Item: 3.5 Inch YJ Lift with BDS CAV Shocks
Part: BDSKYJ4SHOCKS
Price: $650.38

Is this about right, or can I do better? If I pick it up I figure I save $50.00 in shipping over other kits I see online? However for my application I need new shackels as well to replace the oversized ones on the YJ now - so do I go the BDS route and after adding the shackels and spend about $800, or should I consider the RE HD kit with shackels and spend my $800 there?

Any thoughts

That is about right for a price.. A little insider info for you.. BDS ships all orders 500 and over for free. Wether or not you can get JDS to agree to that is up to them. You can also price shop, but like you said you will have to deal with shipping.

I know nothing about the REHD kit, is there anything else in the kit that the DBS doesn't have? If the added features of the REHD kit are worth the extra 150 then it would be the smart way to go.

But at the same time i know nothing about YJ lifts

For the extra $$$$ the RE kit includes shackles, SS brake lines, and Pitman arm.

My other concern is the 4.5" of lift - I assume this pushes me to a SYE and more?

RE5520 Components Component Quantity
BRAKE LINE SS REAR YJ/CJ/MJ 1
T-CASE LOWERING KIT YJ/TJ 1" 1
BRAKE LINE SS YJ+3" FRONT PR 1

TRACK BAR BRACKET YJ FRONT 1
PITMAN ARM YJ/TJ P/S 1
4.5" EXTREME DUTY YJ FRONT SPRING 2
4.5" EXTREME DUTY YJ REAR SPRING 2
SHACKLE 5" GREASEABLE FRONT 1

so there is another 500 you will need to spend, the BDS kit is at the limits for the SYE/driveshaft. You will need to do it eventually to do it correctly. So that is up to you once again.

My feeling is and you will hear it all over.. Do it once, do it right. The BDS kit like i was saying will net you around 4 inchs after settling. The REHD i have no idea what that will net you, but from past experiences with RE probably around 5 inches or so.

By the way this should be moved to the Tech Section

From someone who has a YJ and a BDS lift, I can clear this up... The BDS gave me 4.5 inches of lift. It has double military wrap springs, and their company warranty is unbeatable.

Comparing to RE: the standard 3.5 is junk, the 4.5 as everyone on JU says is nice, but it still sages to around 4. RE uses half military wrap on one side and full on the other. RE is a good running mate to BDS, but their customer service sucks. Also good luck getting it warrantied when it sags, because they don't.

Yes their is a complete kit, but either way both Kits will work, but you will have to drop the T-case. I did not want to do that so I had to do the SYE right after the install.

Also you can shop and do much better on the price, I know of a few guys. If you really want to know the best set up...

Buy the BDS Kit with no shocks, (save some money there)
get Doetech Shocks which will make you YJ as smooth as it can.
Buy MORE boomerang shackles, and some SS brake lines... but since you already are a pro at doing lines, you can just make some extensions.

Thats it,

few side notes on BDS, I did a ton of research when buying a leaf kit, out of all the companies, BDS is the only one that is a great company to deal with, I asked them things like, what if the Military wrap makes the lift to stiff? They said cut them off at home and they will still warranty it. Or my biggest question was, what if the springs sag, esp when I went through 2 sets of stocks ones, I was really concerned. I called Sky Junker and RE, both said no, BDS said that they will want you to get them tested at a local spring shop (cost $20) to see if it is both springs (usually one sags and the other cant support it) and they will replace whatever the shop says.... now that is a company...

Also, most smaller companies like, Tuff Country, RE 3", Rough Country, Heck Thorn, Black Diamond, and Trail Master all Rumored to use Super Lift springs which are known to be hard riding and don't flex as good as they could.

Side note, I may have a set of MORE shackles for sale realy soon...

I have a BDS 2" lift kit, it netted me 3" easy. I got the smaller one as I plan on going SOA using the springs eventually.

Note on JDsOffroad. I have had horrible experience with them. when I tried to buy my lift ffrom them they just dicked me around.

quoted me one price, said it would be in in a few days. Call when they say it would be in. and they sold it out from under me. told me they could have another one in a few days (I really needed that day because I was puttin it in over my christmas break and had to leave for boston soon.) SO I said ok, he then told me the price was $200 more than what he originally quoted.

I decided to go through DrivingImage instead. Much better service, they have a store in Farmington and in southwick, MA

the number of the farmington store is (860) 675-4211

oh yeah, When I have complained about them online, the threatened to sue me for libel.

Until I explained libel to them, and How me complaineg about horrible service wasn't libel, as it was true.

I have heard nothing but good things about Driving Image.
I've been buying my performance parts from him since the 80's. Bill's a great guy to deal with.

Another good call........

I gave Driving Image a call, very helpful, good price and the kit is on order... should have next week!
