Tubing????????

I just used a bunch of 2x4's from home depot, pine works real well.

Yeah me to but i think i need an upgrade...It's started to rot...

There's a lot to it. It's more than just the material, its the design as well. Is this going into your XJ? That adds another level of issues if it is.

So as i was sayin' when you stopped by...

1.75"dia x .093wall DOM is what is generally used. it's also what the american hot rod association has in their guidelines.

Thanks by the way again. Can't wait to get the rest of the stuff i need and get the Jeep in the woods.
I'm gonna order that tube up tomorrow, Thanks for that too.

Oh yeah you find anything else layin aroung in the garage I might need let me know.

I used 1 3/4" x .120 DOM tube for the interior cage, and 1 1/2" x .120 DOM for the exo cage. They're right in the neighborhood of 2 lbs per foot give or take a few ounces.
There's not much to directly tie a cage into on an xj. It's a bacically a tin box. You need to spread the mounting points over a larger area to stiffen up the chassis, and to make the cage safe and effective.

Here's a couple pics of mine while it was being roughed-in.
Every mounting point ties into a solid piece such as crossmembers, tube rockers, and chassis reinforcements. The exo cage ties into the interior cage throught the roof, and then the roof sheetmetal was welded to it to seal it up. It survived a pretty good roll earlier this year and only needed the paint touched up.

I'm not puttin the cage in my XJ yet, maybe in the next few months.
My buddy Paul has a Range Rover Classic that we cut the roof off of right down to the tops of the fenders & doors that were caging real soon. The bender should be here tomorrow or Friday and the DOM will be there Tuesday. Once thats done then my other buddy Kurt has a CJ5 were finishing the cage on too. So by the time I get around to mine it could be a while....and from what XJ Mark and you said I'm not sure if i want to. Maybe I'll just invite you guys down to the shop and buy a bunch a beer and pizza (of your choice of coarse) and have ya help... :beerchug: :drink:
