As I put everthing back together on the YJ - the seatbelts are all "rolled in" and I cannot get them to unlock and extend so I can re-install them. I tried holding the main component (that mounts on the rollbar in back) level as it would sit mounted and I cannot get any of the belt tp feed out so I can reach the mounting points - the same is true for both sides. how do I get this to release?

Help

Are they rolled all the way in???

If not try feeding a little bit back in to release the locking mechanism and then pulling them back out real slow. That happened to my CJ belts once after they were installed. I had to unbolt them to do it but that little trick worked for me. HTH

you have to mount the main part down at the base of the roll bar.. then pull them out. The reason is there is a gravity switch of some sort with a ball in it that has to be level and centered, otherwise it will lock.

I was going to sugest the same type of thing. Hold them in the position they would be mounted in and give them a little tap straight down. I think there is a cam or ratchet device that locks them up and by tapping them you may get it to unlock.
...but what do I know...I own a CJ. 8)

it is a ball sitting in a rounded cup.. the ball must be in the center of the cup in order for the belt to release

Thanks guys.... I got both fronts and only one of the rear belts to work again, so as I was thinking over what to do, my dog (110 LBS Chesapeake Bay Retriever) came an sat on my foot and tilted his head at me with the WTF look on his face.... Afetr that my path was clear - no seatbelts, no nothing! The rear of the YJ is now a dog friendly zone! I think it is a real win win - the dog gets lots of space in Jeep, and I have an excuse to purchase some "webbing" for the rear to make it safe for the dog.

"honey, I don't want to order more stuff for the Jeep - I have to, in order for the dog to be safe!"

BRILLIANT :!:

It's always a good day when you can save yourself some extra effort and use it as a reason to buy new cool stuff :D

We have one like this:

WOW  I didn't know there was such a market for canine safety restraints. Good to know for when I finally get a dog that isn't property of the state. damn those canine cop rules that dont let me take the dog wheelin,

You're a K-9 officer? Cool, bet your dog just LOVES strangers.

to be technical I'm not a k-9 officer, but my father is.
the dog is actually pretty good with people till he tells it not to be. but eh state wont let me take the dog out on trips and such because of the liability issues if he did bite someone

My folks had Shepards for 20 years. Great dog if you were a member of the family, but they got a little touchy around strangers.

You mentioned that your were taking the belts out of the back...........may want to think about inspection.............back seat needs to have passenger restraint.................if its just for your dog, take the back seat out.

Up here in mass, they are really starting to focus on passenger restraint.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the heads up - but the back seat is out - and the dog is in!
