carrier bearings

I pulled my axle apart to replace the spider gears. It's a dana 35 in a cherokee. If you put new carrier bearings on do you need to re-setup your gears. I didn't think carrier bearings could look that bad and still work. If I sandblasted the races it might smooth them out a bit. Maybe a little 40 grit to help smooth them out. (I'm serious).

I driving it as the problem I just had that caused me to loose my spider gears was unrelated (too many neutral drops). Hopefully it will last until I can replace the axle or fix it.

be rights you should not have to re-shim due to a bearing change. However, given the condition of the bearings, i would also question the condition of the pinion bearings. A full rebuild is probably in order, so while its apart, you should recheck the setup.

The axle isn't worth the money. I'd find another before I did a full rebuild. Both axles only cost me about $300 (and $360 in brake parts). I could probably get the same deal again (and hopefully swap the brakes this time).

Can you pull apart the pinon and inspect the bearings and put it back together without resetting the gears?

Yes...because you won't be removing any of the shims.
The shims are between the carrier and it's bearings and underneath the pinion bearing races.

I would get a new crush sleeve if it has one though. It's bad to disturb that.
