Clunking in 4WD Hi

Had the YJ out in the snow yesterday.  Around town in 4-Hi I notices a 'clunking'.  It feels like someone is smacking my floor under my feet with a ball peen hammer.  I noticed it a couple of times before and replaced the transmition torque arm bushing a couple of weeks ago..  This was my 1st drive in 4-hi since.  It happens when under load in 3rd or 4th at right around 35-40 MPH.  I don't feel it while coasting.  Nothing at slower speeds.  Any ideas?  Maybe a drive shaft U-Joint?  I appreciate your input.
Thanks

Tell them to cut it out... it's annoying :rotflmao:

time to shake shake shake....

could be the front d-shaft u-joint... fun, cheap and easy to replace.

Could be the tranny mount..  the torque bolt can only handle a little, and if the regular mount is gone, that would do it...  pry up against the skid and see if it moves excessively.

Last thing is the exhaust pipe, the cat has an hanger right off the side there... double check that tooooooo

and lets put that SYE in already.,...  you have a drive shaft for it?

Hello, New here, but hada similar sound once, way too much slack in teh chain inthe Tcase, made a sound just like you mentioned.
If it was a rear u joint to necessitate a SYE, you would hear it all the time, not just in 4wd. Might be a front u-joint but the sound you describe sounds a little more intense than that.  Check the fluid in the Tcase, if you are running a lift, and a slip yoke, and cycle you suspension off road, there is an increase chance that ATF is seeping past the slip yoke seal.

I hope it's not that

I was up at Smiths 4x4 and they said to check the tranny mount too.  $50 for a used front shaft.  I need to measure the tube 1st, so I guess I'll drop the shaft and check the splines and u-joints before buying a shaft (after checking the tranny mounts 1st )

Don't have the CV Shaft yet - may have the cash in my April paycheck (sucks only getting paid once a month :swear_mad:)
I've only had that SYE 231 sitting on the bench for six months now...

Yup, i was going to suggest the tranny mount.. that is the first thing that came to mind when you said hitting the floor pan.

on martys jeep the clunking in the floor turned out to be a wasted doublecardan joint at the t case. pete

Thanks all for the feedback

Pete - on Marty's - was it a d/c joint on the front shaft or the rear?  I originally assumed I had a d/c on the front shaft - but Smiths front shaft had a regular U-joint F&R
