Ordered a clutch for my buddy's 89 yj. It's got a 4.2L I6. Does anyone know what side (driver or passenger) the clutch bleeder lines are? In order for the company to ship the correct clutch, they have to know this first. Thanks

an '89 YJ with 5 speed 4.2L could have two different trannys - the Peugot BA or the Aisin AX15. I don't know about the Peugot, by the AX15 has the bleeders on the driver side (it's an internal slave cylinder unit)

THe peugeot has the bleeder on the drivers side. the ax15 slave is on the driver side but you bench bleed it. (allow the bubble to work up to the master cyl)

The ax -15 has an external slave cylinder while the peugeot is internal.

look under you jeep and see if there is a black cylinder mounted on the side of the Bell housing. if so then it is external lslave cyl and is a ax15

if the is a tube going into the bell housing and then another coming out with a bleeder on the end then it is an internal slave and a peugeot

also the peugeot splits length wise down its case while the ax15 does not.

Wait a minute - My 90 YJ has an internal Slave Cylinder! - Does that mean I have the dreaded Peugot Tranny? I thought I had an AX 15! Please let me know - now I'm worried... :(

I think that the ax 15 has an internal slave too
I havent gotten into tranny work on my yj yet but i've worked on a couple yj's and xj's that i know have ax15's and they were internal

maybe I am wrong  ..

i just know everyone ax15 I have worked on is external. If you do have an internal slave on your ax-15 i would get rid of it next time you do the clutch

From what I have seen,

up until 1992 their were interal... and 93 they were something else... not exactly sure but I know the part numbers are completely different... I know RIT on the board has a 93 and he knows..

From 94 to 95 they were external using a push rod

For those people that have the external type slave cylinder and wanting to know the EASY WAY to bleed it.

This is how it's done.

Take out the 2 bolts or nuts that hold the slave to the bell housing.
Remove the slave cylinder from bellhousing.
Make sure the clutch master cylinder has fluid in it.
Get a helper to look at the clutch master cylinder with the cap off.
Push on the pushrod mulptiple time (50) or so. until your helper sees no more air bubbles coming up to the clutch master cylinder reservoir.
Put it all back together because you're done at this point.

That was easy huh.... [/b]
