D35 to D44 Axle swap

Will I need to change anything, such as the Axle end of my drive shaft when swapping in the D44?  or will it all match up?

If not are there any spicer joints I can use to mate the stock shaft to the 44 side?  (If you know what I mean by that)

Are there any other gotchyas I need to be aware of?

Or are you talking about Yokes?  What Dana 44 is it?  If Rubi, yes you will need a change.  If it is a XJ, nope...  What driveshaft do you have,  1310?  Even if you have different, there are many conversion u-joints available.  1310 on one side, 1350 on the other... etc....

Fill in the blanks, and we can fill in the blanks...

Damon,
Stock '00 drive shaft, going to a '04 Rubi D44.  Dunno what driveshaft I have, how do I check that?

Yes Scott,
Driveshaft to Pinion Yoke end is what I'm worried about

Like Damon said, conversion joint maybe.1310 to 1350? East to get anywhere. Probably want to check the length from center of axle tube to center of u-joint cap on pinion and compare both axles.44 MAY be a little longer but it may not matter if you lifted jeep a little.

Yeah I have a 2" lift so I don't think I need to worry about the length of the pinion untill it's time to measure for the SYE and new CV shaft

Any ideas what the stock '00 driveshaft is? and what I need to go to to convert to the '04 44?

or where the hell would I look that kind of stuff up for myself?

what is the dana 44 out of?

The dana 44 should be the about 1 inch closer in the pinion.

The xj yoke will be 1310.

The Rubi yoke will be 1330 (I think)

a conversion will work or you can buy a new yoke to match your 1310 from 4WD, Look under CJ.  Remember, Dana 44 uses shims, so just bolt it up, but no settings.

(tech info available when you call Tom Woods)

There are certin things that hide in the dark in a Dana-44 Axle. Can you gess what it is?

So if I read you correctly, the stock Driveshaft in the '00 TJ is a 1310  So I will need a 1310 to 1330 ujoint?  Rather go with the conversion ujoint than mess with a new yoke.

Does Spicer make that conversion joint?  and if I got to NAPA and say I need a spicer 1310 to 1330 SHOULD the guy know what I'm asking for?

.

i would go with the yoke. get the bolt style(no more straps... do you have straps) and if you pop a joint a regular joint will be easier to find

Bolt style yoke would be a little better fo sure----conversion joint easier, cheaper and napa should stock it,buy an extra joint and straps.

Here's another issue I'm looking at:

The brakes,  It looks like the '04 Rubicon has one brake line leading from the front to the back then splits off to the left or right (Disks).  The '00 TJ has two lines from front to back feeding each side separately (Drums).

Should I:

A) plug off one of the ports up front and use just one of the lines going back to feed both sides

B) use both lines, and feed each side separately?

I already know I need to replace the distribution block up front with one from a ZJ if I use both lines, or should I get one from a Rubi and just use one?  Will the master on the '00 provide enough pressure?

do you have abs in that? only reason i can think of for the 2 lines

No I don't have ABS.

Oh, and here's ANOTHER one for ya'll.  What's the electrical connection for on the '04 Rubi 44 axle?  coming off the pumpkin on the pass side is a wire plug, it's an inch or two in front of the (I'm assuming) locker airline port.

The brakes on the Rubi use a Hydraulic for the caliper, and it has an internal mini drum brake for the e-brake.

As for the wiring, do a search over at Rubicon Owners Forum.  Or ask Josh on our board.  He has done it, but if no reply from him, post over at ROF, I have seen this it there.

Is the axle still set up for disks?  Why not stick with those?  (except you just did a brake job on your D35...)

I think the wiring on the axle is for the locker engaged indicator on the Rubi's dash.  Similar to the vacuum disco'ed YJ's and XJ's

I pretty much figured that part out.  Still have to figure out how to hook up the E-Brake

I'll take a look over there...

Yeah the D44 is complete, end to end.  I'm keeping the disks.  I'm just going to keep the individual lines and run each side separate.  That way I only need to replace the distribution block up front with one for a ZJ and get extended lines for the back.  I think YJ lines will work.

Got ya.  I'll just ziptie that back permanently.  or devise an indicator or something.  Thanks.
