hey guys and anyone who can advise me, but i have a dana 30,np231 set up on my cherokee, and my buddy has an extra one piece axle from when he built up his TJ dana 30.... the question is can i install the tj one piece into my dana 30 and eliminate my actuator all together? I have reason to believe the actuator failing. if it is a good conversion what other parts will i need. thanks

yup, it's a direct bolt in, but you have to remove the fork and stuff in the housing before it will fit. will make your front stronger, but it will cause vibes on the street. the yj front d/s is not balanced, and after you put the tj shaft in, it will spin even in 2wd. so you will have vibes, unless you take it to a d/s shop and get it balanced.

so i assume i need new axle seals?? at least, and your saying if i balance the xj front driveshaft i can get rid of vibes ?? sounds good

I've done this conversion before.  You need to get an inner axle seal for a non-disco f/end.  The housing of the disco is not machined to accept it, so the seal needs to be modified to fit into the housing.  To instal the seal requires the carrier to be removed, as the seal actually goes into the inside of the housing.  The seals only last about 4k miles, so the best thing to do is just get a non-disco housing.

ugg, and i know how much work that requires swapping the front end, not thats its hard but being pressed for time and money, it is more work then i want to get involved with right now, im going to try swapping my actuator first. thanks guys

I have a Posi-Lok I'm thinking of selling...  Would replace your actuator completely

It was $199 new.
I was looking to get $100 for it, but if you have a XJ full length passenger side axle to trade -with the trade I'll take $60 for the Posi-Lok

Not trying to kill a sale.  Didn't know if everyone had seen these yet.

It's by the Posi-lick company.  It permanently engages the passenger side axles.  Like have a one piece axle.

Paul, you need to stop putting the wrong seals in...  I switch mine to Chrome Alloy TJ shafts and it was the best mod I did...  the shift fork is such a pita....

seal was easy to put in, far easier than changing the original one on the YJ passenger side.

you can get this kit for about $20 or $30, gives you the seals and cover plate...

I've seen people accuse the vac actuator of failing but it was the vac switch on the side of the transfer case.  When it gets old and crudded up, it will be real slow to switch.  If the light takes a bit of time to catch up after moving the selector lever then that's possibly the switch.

I just change the housings to non-disco.  I have nothing but time.

i ddi this on my YJ last year too.  the axle seal i used was just like Paul said, but i installed it in the axle tube where the old one is, outboard of the shift mechanism.  i believe Randy's has a kit for this now and it may be the kit that was showed in another reply.  it's a worth-while modification.

There's no machined surface on the one piece axle there for the seal to ride on and seal against...

thats what fine-grit sand paper is for...

Why not just install the seal in the tube end next to the differential, like the other side?
