I just got Detroits front/rear. So far the rear has completetly locked up 3 times in 2 days. It wont move foreward or backward at all. The only way it will move is to rock it back and forth and it "pops" out and can move. Anyone else ever have this happen?

My buddy did the install. He has done quite a few. I see the rear pinion seal is leaking too. He's going to take it out and fix it. I hope nothing is broken.

does it feel like it is binding? may not be the locker.not nocking his work, but what did you have done?pete

Detroit's don't lock up like that... it works as a normal axle and you can only tell its there if you turn.

or, if you have a Wrangler body style, you will feel it when you launch off from the line.

I would say you have something else binding....

It feels like the E-brake is on. It wont move either way, until you give it enough power to pop it out. It seems only do it after I back up and park it. Anyways, I'm bringing it to the shop tonite to find out. I had my 3.54's replaced with 4.56's. The gears might be set up wrong?

Pete,
It's a Dana 44 out of a 70's scout II. I brought it out to the shop last nite and the installer said the pinion was pitted around the seal area, but thought it would hold up. It didn't.  He is going to install a new pinion & seal today. He also said that the axle tubes mite not be lined up perfectly causing the binding issue. He said he would check it out. I hope I dont need a new rear.
Al,
Thanks for the offer, but I was able to drive it up there. It drives fine, but locks up after I back up and park it. Weird.

A locker will only make a difference if your trying to spin one wheel faster than the other.  If your pointed in a straight line, then the differential is not doing anything, locked , spool, open it won't make a difference.

Your describing a gear problem where you are not having a proper mesh.

New pinion/seal is installed. Seems to be working good now. He took a look at it and could find no damage. Ha also said the gears are meshing correctly. We'll see...
