My 7.3 diesel throws alt belts every 6 months. When this happens it kicks off my hydrolic belt and they all end up tangled in the fan. Of course it happened tonight on 95. When I loss my hydro belt I lose power steering and brakes. Kinda sucks in a 9000 lb truck. It seems the alt belts should have an idler. The distance form the crank to the alt pulley is too far and I get slap in the belts. I don't dare tighten it any more.
It's a 2 belt pulley and I'm having better luck running a single belt. ANyone out there have this problem...or a solution.

did you change the alt? I have seen the rong thickness washer/ wrong configuration of washers on the alt pully make the belt run just slighty crooked and it wears onw side of the belt until finnaly it throws it.  that was on a m- series cummins with a serp belt though. little diffrent.

If its to loose then it will throw a belt but you need to check the alignment of all the pulleys.  Does the belt fray on just one edge?  I just saw a month ago the same issue on the same truck.  The owner said if he didnt run Motorcraft belts then they just fly off.  By hydraulic do you mean power steering or plow pump?
