I'll be changing out my Diff fluid this week when I put the new guards on
Looking for reccomendations
Gasket only or gasket with RTV or just RTV and what kind of RTV
Also what gear oil to use

TIA

Steve

I just use RTV...I don't think the type matters too much but I've used both permatex Ultra Blue and Right Stuff with good result. Just make sure you get all the old gasket/RTV off of both surfaces with a scraper and some brake cleaner, lay a 1/4" bead on the cover around each bolt hole, and let it set up a few minutes before bolting it back on.

I use 75W90 synthetic (mobil1) and I believe Jeep recommends 75W90 for normal driving and 80W140 for hevy duty use (towing etc) I think either would be fine but you'd probably see better MPG with the lighter gear oil.

Thanks for the replies
The more I think about it though the more I think I'm gonna wait until after 4Play
I just figured while I was gonna have the bolts off to put the guards on I would just go ahead and change it but with the water and mud over the weekend it actually makes more sense to do it after

I used RTV and gasket but cleaning first is important. I also used 80W140 because I think it's better for the gears when you are rock crawling or towing. I don't know what kind of cover you purchased, but if they are the Warn covers, I would also recommend buying real bolts to replace the allen bolts that strip very easily.

Also wondered where to find out more about 4-play. Are new forum members allowed to attend? I just moved up from Virginia and am a member of the Maryland Creepers, NOVA Jeepers and sometimes wheel with OCC (Off Camber Crawlers).

Ron is right, the Right Stuff from permatex is the best out there, not only is it a sealant, but it is also like a glue... out of all the crappy I have done, that stuff by far holds the best, especially when you have the chance of pealing your diff cover back and developing a slow leak...

as for fluid, I used to run synthetic (redline),,, but I have found it to be a waist,, for as much much crap as you get into if you just change it regularly, you can do 4 changes for the price of synthetic. I usually try and change it every 4 big events, or at least every six months,,, and you will find, that that usually it will be pretty contaminated,,, little bit of water from the deep crossings, (not from bad seals, just that water is thinner than oil and a few drops can get past the axle seals) Also, you will find that the condensation that developes from an axle getting really hot, to being cooled by a puddle or mud will contaminate to...

Also if you have the d-35 with the rubber plug, you will be getting water in there left and right... Just use the cheap stuff... (when the axle gets hot, then you hit the water, the steel will actually constric and cause you to suck water right in, so I have heard somewhere  )

If you are sticking with the d-35, they do have covers that swith to a threaded plug... that will make a huge differance...

Use the good synthetic if you have a locker, or a Rubi that requires it  (towing is a reason as well) but you can get a good 80W140 for cheap now to...

To answer you question mcgoo about 4-play. It is a wheeling weekend event that is coming up. Most of our trail rides are member only events. All of the info about trail rides is located on the member side of the board. You will find that most clubs, don't post their trail rides to prevent over use, over populated events, and being most clubs have insurance, that requires clubs to only allow members to come along an be covered.

There is plenty of more info here http://northeastjeep.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9, and feel free to post more questions or PM me directly.,,,

Thanks. I sent you a PM but you already answered my questions. I belong to the Maryland Creepers and the NOVA Jeepers and both clubs have private areas for members.

I downloaded you membership application and am looking forward to one of the upcoming meet and greets so I can meet you and other members.

Thanks again.
