ok so as you all probably niticed fuel prices have started to go up for the summer (rat bastards and there black gold   ) so I am curious what other people are getting for gas milage on ther poor underpwerd lifted four cylinder jeeps cause IM getting about 15 mpg on 31's. im just curious if this is average cause everyone tells me the four banger is great on gas but im kinda like "um yea sure it is" I am runnig the stock driveline and I don't drive 80 mph everywhere I cruse on the highway at about 65 very consistanly. any advice would be great I have a pretty long ride to work. its starting to limit the cash flow for my addictions

I'd say either your driving style is eating gas or there is a problem. How hard do you accelerate? It's not just how fast you drive, it's also how you accelerate too.

My 4.0 cherokee with an automatic gets 18-19 mpg on the highway, down in the mid teens around town.

IN my 97 TJ i used to get around 13mpg wth 31s, IN my New Rubicon i get around 11mpg with 33s. Both TJ engines get about the same gas miliage, neither engine is all that much better.

Make sure when you are at a light to lightly step on the gas rather than racing to the next light.

Your worst gas miliage is below 15 miles an hour or so. So if you can instead of stoping at lights and such, slowly cruise up to them and try to time it so that you hit it green.

Idling is also not the greatest thing to do for gas, it eats gas but you don't put any miliage on..

EPA estimates are done at 35 mile an hour on a 35 degree incline.. there is no way in hell you are going to always see what is on the window sticker. Actually right now the government is cracking down on the EPA becuase a lot of people are complaing that it is similiar to false advertising.[/list]

Gas milage was the LAST thing I was thinking about when I got a JEEP.

I'm with you Karl, find yourself a diesel if the mileage is killing you, I got 50 mpg in my old VW Rabbit. But there is nothing cool about that car other than I filled her up once a month. Gas prices are a scam, crude inventories are higher now than when oil was $35 a barrel. The oil producing nations will end up scewing themselves in the end, as all of the sudden alternitive fuel souces are gaining traction.

Judging from your avitar, that new Jeep looks like it gets amazing milage, so long as it stays on the flatbed. :P

That's my friend's 1955 cj5 with a flathead 4 in it. It sat in a barn for years and was in good shape. Cleaned out the fuel bowl, gave it some fresh gas, and it popped right over. He passed away one year ago this week, he would have fit right in with our group here. Some club members partied and wheeled with John before. Party animal was the best way to describe him.

I'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like he was a good guy, with good taste in vehicles.

99 TJ with the 4 cylinder on 33's with 4.88's and the 5 speed trans, I get about 15mpg everywhere. I drive 65 on the highway and am really easy on the gas. That's just as good as it's gonna get for me.

That's why I bought a 91 Toyota 2wd truck. 26 mpg is awesome!

The thing you need to think about is that you are moving a heavy vehicle with a small engine. So you are going to require more throttle to gain the same amount of speed as the same vehicle with a larger engine.

Plus the 4cyl. was never meant to move 31" tires. are you judging your gas mileage by your odometer? The speedo is off due to tire size, which makes the odom. off. which when you judge your mileage nothing is right.

I wouldn't drive a jeep if were worried about the gas mileage. I have a superduty w/ V10, wanna complain when related to this truck? lol

If your looking for gas milage buy a moped

come to think of it thats not a bad Idea with gas prices the way they are

thanks for the advice. that waas all I was looking for was what other people were getting. I guess that 15 mpg is about as good as its gonna get. I usually shift gears about 2500 rpm. I just was wondering the average was thanks again.

I got 13 mpg on my last tank full in the 03 Rubicon.

I also just checked the 95 1 Ton van from work, 350 V8, 250,000 miles on it, and used to carry full loads of wood, needs a tune up beyond belief and it got 12 mpg...

Gas sucks...

I have a 93 yj with the 4.0 and a 5 speed. I run 31's and get about 16-17 mpg. but I drive mostly highway so i don't know what it would be around town. Nor do I know if that helps being that mine is a yj but I hope that helps.

As for the shifting I shift between 2000 and 2500
