Drone (not the fun kind)

Put a new muffler and exhaust pipe from the cat under the skid plate back last weekend.  Now I get a lot of in cabin noise from just off idle. More than I want to deal with long term. About 100 reviews of the muffler list it as slightly louder than stock and don’t mention objectionable levels of noise.  It seems like I’m getting more noise inside than out.

Aside from just having a different muffler put on, anyone have suggestions for getting rid of drone? I read about insulating the floor of the Jeep, putting a resonator somewhere in the line and suggestions like getting rid of the turn down tip for a straight tip (that didn’t work, I tried because the turn down was hanging pretty low anyway.). The sound deadening just sounds like a band aid on something that’s wrong to start with.

I might hit an exhaust shop at some point and talk to them but at that point I’d probably just suck up the $200 the one on there cost and have them put a stock can on.

I keep coming back to all the comments in reviews  suggesting that the one I got wasn’t supposed to be that noisy and wondering if I missed something or there is a tweak to try before trashing it.  As far as I can tell all my connections are clamped solidly and everything seems to be hanging correctly.

Maybe all the other changes like the skid plates and such are just a bad combination with this particular muffler.

When I changed my muffler about 2 years ago, it was louder than I wanted (on highway it still is). After a week or so, the sound mellowed a bit and was easier to deal with....but then again, depending on construction of muffler, if may get louder over time. Sorry, I guess this isn't very helpful.

There was 1 review of it that mentioned exactly that.

Just took it up the street and cutting the downturn at the tip may have made more difference than I thought.  At high idle in the driveway it’s the same but driving around at 30-40 it seems less boomy. Tomorrow I’ll be on the highway to work and I’ll see what it’s like.

Its got to be the brand of muffler if its isnt touching the body somewhere .  Ive installed a couple systems for guys and when looking at them , The Banks "Monster" muffler looked to be a straight through POS.  I told both owners you wont like this. It sounds great outside and pleasant inside . No drone.  Dynamax is what I run on a heavily built 6 and its totally reasonable .  They have many configurations too. I purchased one with 2.25 in and out with the center pipe of 2"  back pressure first and limit the sound. Crawling it sounds like a V-8 and on the road it make almost normal sound until upper revs.  Hope this helps.  Also , try to wrap the muffler with that header wrap stuff and see if its just not a tin can effect.    FjR68

I think this probably qualifies as a straight through POS.  This one is an MBRP.  I’ll probably try wrapping it to see if that reduces the noise. Leaning down next to it while running it’s pretty tin thin sounding. It was just as loud in the way to work this morning. I’m not sure if it’s as loud outside as inside but either way I think I’ve already learned a decent lesson for the next time I make changes to exhaust.

Come ride in mine.  The you won't mind yours.

The SpinTech muffle Clayton put in mine, and the fact that is sit right below the front passenger seat.  When I first got it back,  I couldn't hear myself think.

After awhile you get use to it.

You’ve got a lot of rear estate to work with. My muffler basically ends at the back of the skid plate, and it’s not too bad (when it’s actually a muffler and not just a resonator)

Make sure the tip sticks out from under the body. That made a huge difference in my truck. If it ends before the bumper it can make a lot more noise inside the cabin.

I ordered some fiberglass wrap and a 12” extension pipe that should get the tip beyond the bumper so I’ll try both of those and see if it makes any difference.

I vote for the wrap but like it was said without baffles its a straight through with little scoops in side to force some sound into the packing. If installed backward it cant do any of that . See if its directional muffler= Arrow  FjR68

I would say dont wrap it, the wrap will hold in moisture and rot the muffler out before the end of winter

Also make sure your exhaust isn't binding or rubbing on the frame or skid/crossmember.  Run the pipe out the back, down turns after the muffler are not going to help with noise.
