Engine Cleaning

I still have a lot of dirt/mud build up from Paragon, under the hood.
I'd like to clean this up, but I really don't know what should and should not get really wet.

Or is there something out on the market that I could spray on and let it do it's thing.

I'm not sure but if you hit a puddle or drive in the rain every bit of the engine bay will end up wet eventually.

I just spray simple green everywhere and then lightly spray it clean with the lightest setting on my nozzle.

I don't spray the pcm or the fuel rail if I can help it.

For what its worth...I recall reading where Simple Green can carode or eat away at aluminum. It was on a military web site and of course I cant remember the link. Apparently at one time it was used to clean the chopper engines an similar equipment. Now, from what I understand it is a prohibied to use SG on military bases to clean aluminum.

Sounds like urban legend however if I locate the link, I'll post it. I just got to the car wash and use the wand on LOW pressure. FWIW...

Due to excessive oil coverage, dirt and mud just won't stick to my motor. :avid:

my local carwash has an engine cleaner setting in the DIY wash bay. i used that and it made everything cleaner than when i bought the thing. you would have to find a place that recycles their own water, cuz i doubt they'd let this stuff get out into the environment. i can't imagine it would be very healthy.

I use aluminum foil to cover the distributer cap, the sensors around the throttle body, and the ecu. The aluminum foil is easy to form an cover those things, it doesn't need to be watertight just enough to keep a direct blast from the hose off.

Then i hit everything with foamy engine bright or simple green or citrus cleaner or whatever degreaser I happen to have handy and then use an old dishwashing brush to scrub whatever I can reach and then let it soak for 5-10 minutes and hose it all off really well and then pull out all the aluminum foil.

Afterwards I'll clean the battery if it needs it with a baking soda - water solution and a terminal brush and then I'll clean the plug wires and hoses by hand and apply STP clear silicon spray to them to give them a like new shine. Then start it up and run the engine for a while to dry everything off.

Well it's done. Clean it as best as possible with some old soap and water, and some Armor All - All Purpose (Non Corrosive) Cleaner.

And I only managed to short out the rely to the fog lights. :shakehead:

So it's all good.

buy "GUNK" its a really great engine degreaser...just cover things like teh D-cap and tps with plastic adn spray on....

then rinse with teh hose

and let dry

it all burns off and the engine looks great
