Need a new tailpipe but couldn't get the rest of the pipe out of the muffler so I figured I'd replace that as well. But, I'm running an 81 cj with a 93 4.0 engine. What muffler do I use, one that fits an '81 258 4.2? Also any tricks to getting the muffler off the cat. Its not welded but sure seems like it is. I pounded for a little bit but I'm concerned I'll crack another part of the system, not exactly fresh steel here. Should I be concerned and have it torched off or step up to the BFH?

dont get a flowmaster 40 series i have a 4.0l and it sounds like crap...but teh 50 series my buddy has sounds great, dont know if itll fit on a cj though, 50's are a little longer

At first I thought the muffler should be matched to the engine which it should in theory but ran into problems with the yj pipe curving into the tank, so got the cj pipe ($10 more) which is a 2 0r 2 1/8'' pipe vs a 2 1/4'' pipe on a muffler thats for the 4.0. As fun as it would be to have a bad ass sound rumbling down below, I would hook up an empty can of baked beans to be done with this on the cheap.

 Tail pipe rotted

If the muffler pipe is on the outside.... cut it off on the muffler side and then use a grinder to slice into the outside pipe, just be carefull not to slice to deep. Usually you just need to slice in the area where the clamp was and you can open it up.

I usually just run a cheap generic turbo muffler, around $20 from NAPA.

I have the turbo II muffler from the sutozone on my heep. 87 YJ with a 92 4.0 swapped in. works great and is $19.99

If your good with a sawzall , you can slice off the pipe and slide the blade inside and cut the inside piece until it is almost through. Then take a screwdriver and buckle the piece inwards at the split. Then the stub can be removed easily.
