Failing oil pump or preasure sensor?

When I pull up to a light or allow the rpm's to drop back near idle, on occasion my oil preasure guage will indicate 0 and my check guages light will come on.  If I hit the gas it'll come back up.  this is on a 2k TJ 4.0

Anyone seen this?  is it the pump or sensor?

.

Oh, and another thing...  Anyone else experience their lifters loosing their prime if the vehicle sits for a day or two without running?

very common problem, you can replace the oil pressure sending unit, but most likely it will happen again. You would know fairly quickly if it was your pump.

What Zach said....

I replaced my psi. sensor 2 times in 2 years, they're just cheaply made I guess...and cheap. :swear_mad:

GoofyWackyJeep,
Did your psi sesor exibit the same behavior?  I'll pick one up on the way home if Crapa has any in stock...

Any ideas on the lifters loosing prime?  This just started happening on my jeep this past winter, still happens if the jeep sits for a day or two, Sometimes even does it if it sits for a few hours, but it's not consistent...

for the lifter noise  try changing the brand of oil filter you use. some filters have cheap anti drain back valves. if the noise is only at start up

It is weird, but from what i have seen after the first sending unit goes bad, they usually go bad fairly often after that... I stopped replacing them and continued to drive with it like that.

loosing prime, what are you getting, Lifter noise on start up?

Exactly... It usually only lasts a few seconds, but sometimes it'll go for a bit before they get re-primed.  It's really annoying.

I'll have to check and see if the shop changed their oil filters or brand this past winter...  Guess I'll have to start doing my own oil changes again.

if your oil pressure was really zero, your lifters would start ticking and the bottom end would start to knock.  The factory jeep gauges do not read below 10 psi.  My last cherokee had squat for oil pressure.  Watching the gauge.  The oil pressure would slowly drop once the engine idled down and it would hit the ~10 psi point and drop to zero.

As far as startup wrapping, slick 50 is designed to get money from your wallet, nothing else.  Those ptfe particles will get caught where ever they can.  They'll plate you oil filter paper nicely.

Try a better oil, I had a car lose all oil pressure a few weeks after going to a speedy place.  Their oil was so cheap it broke down in weeks.  The stuff poured out like water.  Put new oil in, no more problems.

I use Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer in all of my vehicles since they're all over 100K miles.
It makes a difference. It's not one of those teflon based gimmics.
