So I am looking at putting in the 3rd starter in 4 years - wtf - any ideas? Ring gear is fine...... Get a loud bang / metalic noise when I crank over the starter (and it starts) - can feel it banging when I hold it as the little woman starts it  like a internal bushing let go and it is spinning loose in the housing ..... I don't mind the work to change em - but what could be causing such a string of bad starters... or is it jusr bad luck?

Yes they are rebuilts - AC Delco

Should I go with something else - or learn to just change em out every 16 months.....

A little more info would be helpful.

What kind of engine?
Some GM starters need to be shimmed to work right.

I know on my dump truck I need to use the proper FORD started. Went through 2 rebuilds in one year. Replaced with a new Ford one, no problems.$$$$$$$$

rebuilds are a hit or a miss, only safe bet is to buy a crap one from place like pep boys, so they will warranty it...

Try spending the money for a high toque one, like a mean green unit or power unit from Q-tech, may solve it for you.

AutoZone in Torrington give 'em away free!!!

does this mean she holds the key to start after the enine is runnig for a second or so?

if yes than that is probalby wearing the gear and bendex out prematurely.  i see this alot with the diesel tractors in the winter.
