Garage Heat

I contemplated a few different heating options for a few years now. Originally was thinking wood, but didn’t want to spend the money on a proper chimney. Considered natural gas since I have it piped into the house, probably will one day but not yet. Recently I’ve been playing around with this little diesel heater for a couple weeks now. Also sometimes called a parking heater. Meant for like a camper. It runs on diesel fuel or kerosene. Little 1” pipes for intake and exhaust. The combustion chamber has fins around the housing and there’s a fan to blow air over it.

I made a plywood block off plate for my window and routed and intake and exhaust through it. The window just closes on the plywood and it seals decently well. I ran this heater for 8 hours today and it burned about 2/3 of a gallon of fuel. Garage is currently 58 degrees. And since it’s a slow burn, everything in it is also 58 degrees, which helps it hold the heat.

Anyway just wanted to post up because it’s been really good so far, and figured someone else might want to try one. They are like $110 on amazon.

I’ve seen those all over Tik Tak with those kids converting cargo vans and busses into campers and using those. They all seem to love them.

That’s more what they are intended for. They are 12V DC powered. I run a converter.

I've been running a CDH (Chinese Diesel Heater) in my woodshop for two seasons now.  I used to use a propane big buddy heater, but it puts a lot of moisture in the air and was flash rusting the cast iron top of my table saw, bandsaw, and lathe.  Plus I didn't feel comfortable with an open flame when I wasn't in the building.

I like that the CDH has the exhaust and combustion intake on the outside - now I don't have to worry about the heater sucking in aerosol finishes, brake clean fumes, or wood dust.

I like the warm dry air and it has a remote so I can turn it on from the house and pre-heat the shop before I go out there.

I run it off a 12V transformer, but I added a back up battery this season, so if the power goes out, the unit can go through a proper shut down cycle that prevents things from overheating and melting down the circuit board (the fan keeps running a few minutes after the combustion stops)

Heats up my small show pretty well.  I might get a second one for my assembly room.

And as was mentioned - this thing sipps fuel, and I already have diesel on hand for my Kubota.  It will run all day on the little internal tank, but if I plumb it into a 5 gallon can - it would last me all week!

Hmm, I’m going to need something for the barn. I’t’s 1,500sf completely open and not insulated. I’m going to give it a couple winters before I do anything…

This definitely would not be enough for the space you have Pat. I think it’s rated for a space about half the size of my garage, but it brings the temp up enough to be comfortable while working. It does take a while though. But like Frank said, it brung it up slow with warm dry air so you don’t get al the flash rusting.

. I would seriously look at heat pumps given your location.

It’s like, where do you stop. I chose not to insulate due to cost. Spent money on the electrical service. Still don’t have a lift. Appears this year is unseasonably cold. Gonna give it a couple years. One thing I do have, it warms up as soon as the sun hits the roof.

Also, as I age, I simply say fawk it and sit in my warm house…

Got the other one set up in the basement tonight. Should help in a couple days when it gets unreasonably cold

My wall pass through is a little nicer this time around too!

Did you take the cover off your new one?  I assume it's pretty much a clone of the HCalory.  I have both too and other than cosmetic - the main difference I could see was a green flexible fuel line on the HCalory and a white rigid fuel line with rubber ends and actual fuel line hose clamps!.  I swear they both run the same.

BTW - I really like your exhaust spool piece modifications.  Is that just a hull pass through with some exhaust tube added?

Also - you might want to avoid posting your installation pic on the CDH forums - those guys have a melt down about having the combustion intake inside next to the unit.

They think you will suck all the oxygen out of the room!  Maybe in a hermetically sealed coffin  :rotflmao:

Most of our homes have plenty of air leaks to avoid a vacuum inside...
