well as it reads my 97 wrangler 4.0l is gonna need its fuel pump replaced soon. I just wanted to ask everyone if buying one from the stealership or buying one from a place like advanced auto would be a good idea. Advanced had some ones listed online ($160-$200) for considerably less then the stealerships $350 offer but I do want the right one and done right the first time. Open to suggestions.

its for the 19 gal. tank and its gonna need the cheaper of the 2 pumps during the 97 year according to stealership.

thanx

my mechanic will probably do it

If you have your mechanic do it.  Tell him you want the unit dropped down on the rails.  It'll give you ~5 gallons more available capacity in your tank.

currently if you "run out of gas" you actually have 5 gallons sitting at the bottom, just out of reach of the pickup.  Dropping the pump assembly on the rails will allow you to have access to it.

Nice little trick.  Going to di it myself when I put on my skid plate since I'll be dropping the tank anyways.  This also works on several cherokee models, not just the TJ's.

blackandtan  --  let me take a look around I may have the pump I removed from mine when I went to the cell.  You can have it if I find it

MasterDrazhar  -- what do you mean by "dropped down on the rails"?

I assume the '97 is the same as the '98.
My pump was held in the top of the tank with a big plasic nut - no way are you going to relocate the pump to get it deeper in the tank, without sectioning the pump body and lengthening it..

OK - read the instructions - there must have been a change to the '98 and later pump units, 'cause they can't slide 4.5" to make the "15 gal." tank a 19 gal. tank, the retaining nut configuration won't allow it, even if it did, the tank is mounted about 1" below the bed.

Drop your tank and take a look

That would be pretty sweet to have an extra 5 gal seeing that our wranglers aren't exactly fuel efficient. According to the stealership I have the 19 gal tank after putting my Vin# through. I know 97 was a finicky year with things on the TJ. As it sits now the jeep runs fine its just that its having a little trouble starting after sitting for awhile which would lead me to believe its loosing its prime in the fuel line from poor seals. No engine light yet.
